Improving the robustness of a smartphone-based emotion-from-voice app

Abstract

This TSB Technology-Inspired award for £106,489 is to improve robustness of ei Technologies Ltd's emotion-from-speech smartphone application, PERE (Personal Emotion Recognition Engine), developed in conjunction with The University of East Anglia. PERE aims to improve the effectiveness of psychological therapies, used to treat conditions such as depression and anxiety, through improving the patient's awareness of changes in their emotions; a key barrier to effective treatment.
The total cost of this project is £148,413 and is expected to last 9 months.
Psychological illness is the biggest disease-related burden in the UK; bigger than cancer or diabetes. The NHS currently spends £3Bn treating depression and anxiety; conditions that cost UK business £16Bn.
