Confluence - Designing Environmental Modelling Workflows

Lead Participant: HR WALLINGFORD LIMITED

Abstract

Confluence: Designing Environmental Modelling Workflows
Organisations such as HR Wallingford and British Geological Survey (BGS) use numerical modelling to research into and deliver practical solutions to complex water-related challenges ranging from flood risk management to water supply and designing offshore structures. Such models often require extensive data preparation, multiple runs and may yield complex results requiring display and analysis. These processes are controlled by workflows. The HR Wallingford led ‘Confluence’ project will include Horizon Digital Economy Research who will investigate the needs of both scientists and business managers to help derive the underpinning principles of a new methodology for creating such workflows. Prototype solutions will be developed at HR Wallingford and BGS to test their feasibility. This new narrative between software developers, scientists and business managers will meet the challenges of these complex and developing markets by unlocking new efficiencies, enabling new products and services to be derived and creating more effective pull-through from research into practice.
