Simulations tools to enable Asset Life Extension (SALE)

Abstract
The wind energy industry needs more accurate and efficient tools to calculate unsteady loads. These tools (for
in-service use) will inform yield and asset life decisions. They will be used to reduce O&M costs and hence LCoE.
Ocean Array Systems and the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult have won support from Innovate UK for
their Simulation to enable Asset Life Extension project. This will (1) validate a simulation tool for wind turbines /
arrays and (2) investigate the feasibility of a control systems module to aid farm-level management of turbulent
effects.
Using (velocity and loads) data sets from wind turbine locations, OAS’ simulations enable site-specific
predictions of turbine performance, accounting for turbulence, providing owners with a tool to enable asset-
life-extension.
