Poultry Gut Health

Abstract
Necrotic Enteritis (NE) is a widespread problem with poultry gut health, leading to losses in the global
Poultry industry of over £3bn, a burden of £25-30 million in the UK. We are developing a monitor that
will indicate when the poultry are developing this problem in their guts, allowing farmers to take early
and effective action, with non-antibiotic interventions, to turn the condition around – leading to
improved animal health and welfare, an improved quality product and greater productivity. This will
help the poultry farmer fulfill the public’s double edged requirements or inexpensive chicken meat and
improved animal health and welfare.
This technology is being developed for other livestock conditions, where we also expect to be able to
provide the enabling tool for the farmer to improve his productivity while meeting the animal welfare
demands on the 21st century public.
