Abstract
Understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies from the earliest times to the present is a key issue in astrophysics. In this project the student will use the best optical, near-infrared and radio survey data coupled with a fully probabilistic approach whereby likelihood functions are determined for key physical and observational parameters and their inter-relations, e.g. photometric redshifts, stellar masses, dark-matter halo masses and the level of AGN activity, to obtain the most robust understanding of galaxy evolution to date. The student will then be able to carry out a similar analysis on cutting-edge simulations to explore the key physics that underpin the evolution of galaxies. The project will use data from key international surveys on the LOFAR and VLA and then MeerKAT, along with ESO facilities.
