Embedded Row Flutter and Aerodynamic Damping
Lead Research Organisation:

Department Name: Mechanical Engineering
Abstract
Flutter in compressor blades can be affected by the acoustic reflections from an adjacent blade row. Previous research has identified under what conditions the acoustic reflections are important to be considered in detailed aero-mechanical calculations. However, there are still many complexities which need to be addressed in such analyses. Equally, with more reliance on bladed disks in fans and compressors, detailed knowledge of the aerodynamic damping is equally - if not more important - as the knowledge of the forcing. This research would extend the fundamental understanding of the influence of acoustic reflections in embedded row flutter and enable Rolls-Royce to improve its tools leading to improved component designs.
