Evolutionary materials for new computing applications
Lead Research Organisation:
Durham University
Department Name: Engineering
Abstract
This project will explore the use of reconfigurable electronic materials (e.g. carbon nanotubes suspended in liquid crystals) as a disruptive computing platform. This will involve a wide range of activity, including programming evolutionary algorithms to control the material, designing and testing hardware, application to machine learning problems and fabrication of computing devices. This project thereby addresses the critical issues posed by the 'flatlining' of performance provided by conventional silicon semiconductor technology.
