Abstract
The aims of this PhD in AI-Assisted composition are to: develop a series of machine learning-derived tools that can be used throughout the compositional process to assist, augment and inspire the composer; create a series of musical works that result from intensive collaboration with creative experts in the field of artificial intelligence; and to compose a number of works that respond to and comment on salient issues in the developing field of AI.
It is expected that these results will be useful both artistically, in that the pieces composed will be primarily an exercise in concert music, not in creating totally computer-generated music, and for academic purposes, in that novel computational and compositional processes will be developed that build upon previous work by other specialists.
