Health Impact of Nicotine & Tobacco (HINT): a microsimulation decision-support tool for local and national tobacco control policies in England

Lead Research Organisation: University of Liverpool
Department Name: Institute of Psychology Health & Society

Abstract

This project will develop a microsimulation decision support tool to aid tobacco control policy makers at the local and national levels. The tool will quantify the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and equity of tobacco policies, and visualise this information in a user-friendly web-based user interface. In this project, I will expand the state-of-the-art IMPACTNco microsimulation framework with a synthesis of relevant evidence, including the emergence of electronic cigarettes. I will then utilise established contacts with tobacco control experts, and co-develop 'what if' policy scenarios (e.g. raising the minimum age to purchase tobacco, reducing prevalence in smoking during pregnancy, reducing smoking prevalence in people with mental health conditions) to produce actionable and timely evidence for guiding tobacco control policies.
