Waves and Oscillations in Reconnecting Magnetic Solar Flux Ropes
Lead Research Organisation:

Department Name: Physics and Astronomy
Abstract
The student will investigate the generation of waves and oscillations by reconnection, focussing on the merger and interaction of twisted magnetic flux ropes. Initially, simulations of reconnecting flux ropes will be performed using 2D magnetohydrodynamics. The resulting waves will be analysed and identified, and the dependence of their properties on the parameters of the flux ropes will be explored. The project will then develop to more advanced models, potentially extending to 3D and considering the acceleration on non-thermal particles using a test-particle approach. The implications of the model results for understanding Quasi Periodic Pulsations in solar flares will be considered.
