Abstract

Ideas in Transit
This has been a 5-year project focusing upon understanding and engaging with the processes of user innovation in relation to transport. This has taken place in the context of a growing number of web-based services emerging that are being developed outside of the big corporate providers and which rely upon open data and/or co-operation between users. The research has examined the context for user innovation in terms of the problems or challenges people face in their everyday (mobile) lives. It has explored the process of user innovation with the innovators themselves to understand motivations, barriers and enablers. It has applied the principles of co-design to engage with users in shaping the development of innovations. Developments in user-generated and open data and data visualisation have both been studied by and enhanced by the work of the project team. The project has itself developed and applied a mechanism (Geovation) to help support and enable the advancement of innovations and specifically the project has supported and studied six case studies of user innovation development.
