Le Bug MRSA ID System

Abstract

The aim of the project is to introduce into the hand cleaner market a new innovative device
that will allow people to determine whether their hand washing has been successful at
removing pathogenic micro organisms. The Le Bug when used with a hand wash containing a
UV marker can show a user whether pathogens are present on their hands.
Latest research there were 2,495 cases of MRSA and 36,058 cases of C.Difficile and
on average 67% of these were caused outside of the hospital. The NHS has put into place
guidelines to ensure that people who have the bug do not enter the care facility. However
swabs are generally taken when patients enter a ward and this is then often too late.
This new innovative idea has the capacity to reduce the transfer of bacterial pathogens and
therefore seriously improve both healthcare and hospital cleanliness standards whilst making
the NHS more cost effective and efficient.
This new innovative device and handwash will:-
1. Reduce risks of infected patients entering the hospital through a quick screening process
that could be done outside of the ward. This would replace the current ‘swab and wait’
process
2. Reduce transfer of infection by medical and cleaning professional giving them a quick and
easy way to check their hands are properly cleaned between care of each patient.
3. Reduce transfer of infection by visitors, giving them the capacity to ‘see’ if their hands are
genuinely clean before entering a ward
4. Include broader use of the device which could be used in schools, restaurants/cafes,
household kitchens, supermarkets, GP surgeries, dentists, tattooists etc.
The device needs to be developed as both a wall mounted unit (for visitors/general public use)
and a portable ‘hand held’ unit for busy professional staff on the move.
The key aims and objectives of this project are to:
1. Undertake market research and market testing
2. Complete the IP process
3. Produce a report that will help shape a draft commercialisation plan
