External Wall Insulation with an Integrated Solar Absorber Unit

Lead Participant: MINT RENEWABLES LIMITED

Abstract

The UK market for external wall insulation ("EWI") is set for rapid growth as government
policy focuses on improving the energy performance of existing buildings via the "Green
Deal" and "ECO" programmes.
The project aims to confirm the significant market potential for utilising a solar absorber unit
integrated with/attached to EWI systems, to capture the heat from the solar absorber and use it
to contribute to the space and water heating demands of buildings.
As the UK and many countries across the world seek a higher contribution to energy demand
from renewable sources, the concept of a building’s fabric making a significant contribution
to its energy demands is a powerful one with huge global market potential.
The project workplan includes consultation with:
• insulation companies with EWI systems (including Rockwool, Envirowall);
• manufacturers of wall cladding and roofing products and systems;
• air handling/air heat exchange specialists;
• University of Cardiff’s School or Architecture;
• Green Deal & ECO programme managers and "providers";
• Registered Social Landlords; and
• owners of commercial buildings.
The project will assess the commercial viability of the innovative concept through in depth
market analysis, detailed cost/benefit analysis for the system and analysis of routes to market.
In addition to project reports, a key outcome of the project will be the formulation of a
detailed route map (and the identification of collaborative partners) for proving the concept,
product development, demonstration and commercialisation.
