Sustainable Venture Development Partners (Fleet Management System)

Abstract

Sustainable Ventures Development Partners (“SVDP”) work with investors, entrepreneurial
managers, and corporates to originate, build and grow sustainable companies.
SVDP propose development of a Fleet Management System (“FMS”) which combines
compact vehicle telematics with a new software tool to provide public sector, corporate and
outsourced fleet managers with substantially improved control of employee road travel.
Meeting the United Kingdom’s greenhouse gas emission reduction targets will require
substantial reductions from the transport sector generally, and corporate and public sector
fleets specifically. Inefficient management processes, compounded by the increasing cost of
equipment, fuel and labour, are impacting on business transport costs. This is creating a
compelling economic imperative for improved control.
The FMS solution will take advantage of on-going reductions in telematics and wireless
communication costs to efficiently collect and transmit usage data (including access times,
driver details, mileage and fuel/electricity consumption) to a centralised system which
allocates vehicles, controls access, tracks usage and assesses fleet performance against userspecified
metrics. A user-friendly front-end will allow scheduling of use and real time
monitoring.
It is anticipated that successful deployment of such a tool across UK vehicle fleets and car
pools has the potential to reduce business travel costs by up to £4 billion per year and
eliminate up to 2.2m tCO2e/annum.
Successful deployment of the FMS solution requires co-ordination among many different
stakeholders including hardware vendors, software developers, telematics service providers,
wireless carriers, automotive OEMs and major fleet users. Before this can be achieved the
addressable market requires further segmentation and appraisal; the customer proposition
must be refined and validated; supply chain readiness must be verified; and a system
development roadmap must be established.
