Sustainable Venture Development Partners (Cloud-based Domestic Heating Control System)

Abstract

Sustainable Ventures Development Partners (“SVDP”) works with investors, entrepreneurial
managers, and corporates to originate, build and grow sustainable companies. Growth of these
companies is de-risked through access to our extensive network, deep sector expertise and
venture development experience.
SVDP propose the creation of a cloud-based heating control system (“CHC”) designed to
improve the efficiency of domestic heating thereby lowering household heating bills.
The United Kingdom has made a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least
80% below base year levels by 2050. Meeting this target will require substantial energy
efficiency improvements in the domestic market. Improving boiler usage patterns will make a
significant contribution to this.
The CHC system consists of three components: a low-cost wireless transceiver designed to
control the boiler; a wireless thermometer plugged into the main living space of the house;
and a user-friendly smart-phone app/secure website to control the functionality of the system
and provide remote data monitoring. The system will be straightforward to install and capable
of being retrofitted into existing heating control systems.
Recent advances in wireless technology and high WIFI penetration (currently >75%) have
resulted in the ability to migrate existing heating control hardware to low cost cloud based
software control systems. It is anticipated that successful deployment of this CHC system
across the UK domestic market has the potential to reduce domestic heating costs by up to
£1.3 billion per year and deliver lifetime savings of ~60mtCO2e.
The proposed study will further segment the addressable market; develop and validate the
customer proposition; verify supply chain readiness; and establish a system development
roadmap to underpin the commercial exploitation of the prototype design.
