Ltd is a leading innovator of optical materials and illumination systems. This proposal
will investigate the commercial viability, IP position and market for a microstructured optical
film (MOF) for LED panel lighting. The MOF will improve the light efficiency and utility of
the LED panels. Panel lighting is characterised as large, flat areas of illumination, as opposed
to spot or strip lighting. In most cases, light is wasted around the panel. The MOF Exxelis
propose to develop and market works by altering the output profile of the panel, tailoring the
illumination profile to place light where required. Exxelis will investigate the commercial
potential for MOFs that offer a range of illumination profiles when used with generic
Lambertian output panel light. Exxelis will also explore how the panel utility is expanded
using the MOF as well as the efficiency gains, reduced component counts, cost of ownership,
power savings and green aspects.
