Connected Car Privacy System - CPS

Lead Participant: AUTOTRIP LIMITED

Abstract

AutoTrip (AT) provides business drivers with telematics mileage trackers (plug & play) and
web-based accounting software to automate the mileage reclaims process and provide fleet
managers with improved control.
AT has developed a prototype design for a ‘connected cars’ privacy system (“CPS”) that
keeps personal data on cars that serve a dual business/personal function private – specifically
‘Grey Fleet’ vehicles. The system is composed of a ‘plug and play’ Bluetooth enabled
telematics device, a key ring attachment and a cloud-based logging system. This enables the
driver to log when a business trip is being completed, which enables the telematics device to
switch transmitting from the ‘default’ private mode to business mode.
The market for ‘connected car’ solutions is expected to grow from a reported €13bn in 2012
to €39bn by 2018 (GSMA, 2013). According to Cisco, connected vehicles data can deliver
added value equivalent to £840 per vehicle per annum (BVRLA, 2014). However, employee
concerns over privacy on personal data persists to limit widespread uptake in business fleets.
CPS takes advantage of maturing Bluetooth technology (low energy and miniaturization),
along with AT’s existing patent pending dual transmission switch on the telematics device to
create a ‘plug and play’ connected car’s product that provides drivers with confidence that
their personal journey data is kept private.
CPS’s system consists of: i) a Bluetooth enabled key ring (including bleeper, proximity
detector, and transmitter); and ii) a ‘plug and play’ Bluetooth enabled telematics device.
Successful deployment of the CPS solution requires co-ordination among many different
stakeholders including: hardware OEMs, drivers and fleet managers. Before this can be
achieved the addressable market requires: further segmentation and appraisal; customer
proposition validation; supply chain readiness verification; and development and
establishment of a systems roadmap.
