BrightWay - Making Smart Phones Smarter - via Automatic Context Classification

Lead Participant: HW COMMUNICATIONS LIMITED

Abstract

Each type of mobility used by a person from driving a car, travelling on a high speed train or
walking in a shopping mall sets a framework of contextual relevance.
BrightWay’s primary objective is a proof of concept for a first of a kind operationally robust
solution using smartphones for the real time classification of a person’s mode of mobility
(walking, running, cycling, car, bus, train and the Underground). A key target is to achieve
95%+ accuracy in order to realise the anticipated economic, social and environmental impacts
and benefits. Examples are: (1) reduced CO2 emissions via greater awareness by individuals
and organisations of their mobility carbon footprint, (2) better contextual interpretation of
people’s activity to provide information that has a high economic or social value to them in
that context.
Although BrightWay’s project scope is primarily concerned with classifying mobility modes
and their environmental impact, its post project exploitation extends to the whole realm of
location based services (LBS) in the consumer, corporate and social services sectors. The
context aware features designed into the BrightWay platform along with its resource efficient
implementation for smartphones will widen the potential base of LBS users. BrightWay will
enable LBS service providers to personalise information for the right people at the right time
in the right place. This benefit is especially relevant to mobile advertising.
BrightWay will incorporate highly innovative techniques for real time classification of the
modes of mobility as well as contextual features in the surrounding environment. A second
project objective is to provide developers a tool to access the classification engine via an API.
This will give the UK mobile services sector a head start in creating ‘game changing’ context
based services (CBS) for a global marketplace in which the UK can become a centre of
excellence.
