Abstract

Niche and OEM vehicle manufacturers currently utilise available electrical and power
electronic components to support the design of their vehicles. Frequently, motors and
components do not meet the performance and efficiency/power utilisation requirements and,
although quiet in concept, produce unaccountable NVH modal issues and reliability problems.
These issues do not allow the cost effective production of a reliable, high quality vehicle that
is acceptable to the market.
Tirius seeks to develop a power and production scalable motor that will overcome the vehicle
designers’ issues found with existing commercial offerings. This proof of concept is to
determine through basic prototyping the benefits of a small interior permanent magnet motor
(IPM) aimed at the L7 and Sub-A class of electric vehicle. The design concept is to consider
all aspect of the design in terms of performance NVH and cost so as to provide a scalable and
configurable system to meet the requirements of vehicle integrators.
