Helios the next generation of servo motor for a safer, greener world

Lead Participant: OVERVIEW LIMITED

Abstract

This project offers the opportunity to save life, detect & prevent crime using enhanced
prosecutable evidence, reduce CO2 emissions and create 30 UK jobs. By allowing higher
resolution technology to be economically accessed we will encourage greater uptake
especially when systems are being replaced.
“Only 3% of London’s street robberies solved using CCTV” says Detective Chief Inspector
Mike Neville, head of Scotland Yard's Visual Images. Mike Lewis of Mobotix AG, a leader in
CCTV, believes this issue is directly related to image quality.
Whilst camera technology is available for higher resolution it’s at 5 times the price. Currently
there is only JVC and us that offer servo-motor drive technology (servo) and it is 5 times the
price of low accuracy stepper motors. Servo technology is an essential part of the CCTV’s
Pan Tilt and Zoom (PTZ) high resolution package because of its high accuracy &
repeatability.
We have identified an opportunity for innovative step change & revolutionary thinking in our
servo and its stator design and manufacture so we can compete on cost with low accuracy Far
East Stepper motors.
By proving the concept and offering a breakthrough in servos and CCTV we will be able to
compete on cost with Far East, poor accuracy, stepper motors. The cost & technical benefits
will enable mass uptake of high resolution imaging so crime prevention and prosecution can
increase. Helios technologies will future proof our offerings because it can be used with
emerging 4K video. (4K is 4 times the resolution of 1080p HDTV).
We shouldn’t tolerate criminals or terrorists. Capture of the Boston Bombers shows how
powerful & effective CCTV and publicity are. The next step has to be crime prevention.
Unfortunately most CCTV in use doesn’t have the capability to help because of very poor
video resolution.
We urgently need to prove the concept to help fight crime, reduce CO2 emissions and
compete.
