Integration of BIM-derived smart buildings

Abstract

This project is a proof of concept to develop a centralised technology platform with an
intuitive user interface to allow complex geospatial data to be presented in a way that is
appropriate and meaningful for users of next-generation Smart systems.
Smart environments, which could range from Smart buildings (derived from BIM processes)
and small industrial sites through to fully Smart cities, allow decisions to be made
intelligently based on the real performance data that is being generated by that environment.
As the number of data sources that are available for decision making increase, the task of
understanding that data and identifying useful information becomes exponentially more
difficult.
We are proposing to build a system that will visualise many disparate data feeds in a single
interface that will adapt for the task at hand, minimizing the need for manual pre-analysis of
the data and allowing more information to be quickly extracted by the user.
This system will deliver increased productivity to users over traditional control systems by
automating significant portions of the data-analysis process that is currently carried out
manually before the decision making process can begin. We foresee that the output of this
project will have wide-reaching benefits for local government, manufacturing, the
construction industry and estate management.
