Imagineer Systems - Multi-View Planar Tracking

Lead Participant: IMAGINEER SYSTEMS LIMITED

Abstract

Movie-making was until quite recently a 2D process in which film was shot on a ‘master’
camera and processed, corrected and edited; sequences with complicated visual effects would be digitally scanned, modified, and composited together from a series of 2D layers. Now, the whole process is becoming digital and postproduction is moving from 2D to a 3D paradigm, using multiple streams of video from cameras with different viewpoints. This not only supports the production of stereoscopic movies but also allows directors to use more complex visual effects. In consequence, the film and video industry needs new methods and tools for digitally processing, combining and viewing information from multiple cameras with different viewpoints. Current computational techniques are complex, time-consuming, and suffer from problems of noise and incomplete data.
The two-year project will research and develop a novel method of carrying out the core
processes of tracking and rotoscoping in stereoscopic and multi-view digital video
postproduction. The method is based on advanced algorithmic research, and promises to increase the quality and reduce the cost of many aspects of digital video postproduction. The results will be new algorithmic processes, embodied in advanced prototypes of professional software products, which will be optimised to take advantage of GPU acceleration.
