Cattle Body Condition Score

Lead Participant: CHALCOMBE

Abstract

Measuring, monitoring and controlling changes in body condition score (BCS) in dairy cows is important to minimise disease risks and optimise production. Existing techniques for measuring BCS are manual, subjective and labourious. We have shown that a manual ‘profile’ technique can usefully assess BCS. We seek to develop a robust working prototype of an electronic version of the probe and need to work with external specialists to develop the hardware components of a handheld device.
