SIMAN V & V

Lead Participant: I3D ROBOTICS LTD

Abstract

Led by i3D Robotics, a UK SME, this project builds on the previous SIMAN (Smart IMAging for Nuclear) proof of concept demonstrator which aims to produce a novel system for glovebox and nuclear robotic operations capable of withstanding low level, radiation environments. Work undertaken includes; the interfacing with robotics systems to allow for glovebox decommissioning; developing machine learning algorithms for hazardous object detection and 3D output for a new generation of gloveboxes that will use tele-operations. This new verification and validation project, "SIMAN V&V" will produce and demonstrate an intermediate level, radiation tolerant version of the SIMAN system furthering the original design concept.

Qualification of the system for use in other areas of the nuclear sector, such as autonomous decommissioning and sort and segregation of waste allows for greater stakeholder demonstrations and engagement in alternative cross sector applications sharing extreme and challenging environments. Designed to keep human workers safe, the robotic, digitised technology produced has wide reaching applications within a range of industries which now require similar technologies to maintain sustainability in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
