Lead Research Organisation: Manchester Metropolitan University

Abstract

The workshop "Connecting Art and Anthropology' will bring together a small group of internationally respected anthropologists and artists to explore and debate ways of engaging with people and their social worlds.
The aim of the workshop is to consider how the techniques of ethnography are used by artists and anthropologists to create experience and knowledge.
Over a period of three days, participants will undertake information sharing and project work, expanding their understanding of one another's' uses of ethnography, debating the problems and possibilities of treating ethnography as a shared space and asking how and under what circumstances divergent concerns for the social produce similar affects.
The results of the workshop, which will be fully documented, will be disseminated through a journal paper published in an anthropology journal and a publicly accessible website. New understandings of the common areas of interest between art and anthropology are expected to result from the intensive contact between members of the group and to lead to further collaborations between anthropologists and artists.
