| Description | Further knowledge of the regional impacts of the First World War was developed for all members of the research team. This included the analysis and dissemination of important stories relating to economic history, family history, class, race and gender. Collaborating with the BBC enabled the academics involved to develop their public engagement experience which they have gone on to use in their research and professional activities. |
| Exploitation Route | The stories remain available for public access on the BBC's World War One at Home website. I regularly use them as a tool for teaching and as examples in both my writing and in public engagement activities around the centenary of the First World War. My co-investigator, Dr Kate Vigurs, uses the material as part of her work as a historical performer. These findings thus form an imporant basis for generating interest in the history and commemoration of the First World War in Britain beyond the centenary years. |

| Description | Findings were used to select and support 100 short radio pieces produced by BBC Radio Leeds, Radio York and Radio Sheffield. These pieces were then archived on the BBC's dedicated World War One at Home website. Some of the research also formed part of a recently published e-book, published by the BBC. |

| PI Contribution | Both I and my Co-I contributed archival research and subject knowledge to the short radio pieces being produced as part of the BBC's World War One at Home project. This included uncovering possible stories, identifying relevant experts, confirming historical details and images and evaluating the significance of the stories to be told. We also contributed interviews to the stories themselves, as well as related publicity, including appearing at the World War One at Home stand at the Great Yorkshire Show 2014. |

| Results and Impact | The PI and CO-I gave a series of talks and dramatic presentations over the course of three days as part of the World War One at Home stand at the Great Yorkshire Show. They also engaged with passing members of the public when not on stage, particularly around exhibitions on medical care in wartime and a professional actor and model horse in full period cavalry costume. The talks sparked questions and discussion. Audiences were stimulated to explore the history of the First World War more widely, through engagement with project partners and through independent research. I was contacted by an audience member with a question about their research into their family history. |
