Enhanced Audio Description

Lead Research Organisation: University of York
Department Name: Theatre Film and TV

Abstract

Audio Description (AD) for film and television consists of a pre-recorded audio commentary that makes visual content accessible to visually impaired audiences by providing information that clarifies the narrative, such as descriptions on actions, gestures and places. Although, throughout the years, digital technologies have been used to improve the mode of delivery of AD, the notions behind its design have been mostly unchanged despite significant advancements in the field of digital sound production and postproduction. Furthermore, AD is a process separate from the creative production and only considered as an accessibility strategy.
The Enhancing Audio Description project investigates how digital audio technologies can transform the design and implementation of AD for film, television and interactive media and as a result, change the ways in which visually impaired audiences experience audio-visual presentations. This research will pioneer novel sound design techniques based on new audio technologies that can be used to enhance AD, providing an audio track that is closer to the artist's vision and that will bridge the gap between sighted and visually impaired audiences. Moreover, the project will enable researchers in the arts and humanities to improve the communication between audio-visual arts and visually impaired audiences and will drive the development of digital technologies and methods that can be used to improve audio-visual experiences for people with sight loss. The project will investigate ways in which AD can be updated through digital technologies to provide both an informative and entertaining experience, while also encouraging the use of the same soundtrack for both visually impaired and sighted audiences.
Enhancing Audio Description explores two key methods: The first method investigates recent advancements in surround sound rendering and interactive media systems to create a more spatially accurate soundtrack, which includes an accurate rendition of the positions of characters and objects in space, types of shot, camera movements, camera angles and depth of frame; such a method will reduce the need for descriptions. The second method is the incorporation of first person narration as an alternative to the descriptive voice, to provide an AD that is better suited to the style of the visuals and could prove enjoyable for all audiences. Both methods would require the incorporation of AD to the creative process, transforming it from just an accessibility measure into part of the creative workflows. Whilst both methods are highly applicable to cinematic presentations, the research aims to generalise the approach so that visually impaired audiences can have enhanced soundtracks in a multitude of environments such as in museums, living rooms, or on personalised mobile media devices as well as in a myriad of applications such as film, television, gaming, therapy, training and other audio-visual activities which stimulate the UK digital economy. The proposers will therefore engage with key stakeholders from the film, television, interactive media industries and accessibility services to consider the practicalities of their implementation, including how they fit within current workflows. A significant outcome from the research will be in linking the new technological mechanisms for the enhancement of AD with the overall objective of inclusion in new media services for those with visual impairments.

Planned Impact

The proposed research will benefit several groups outside the academic research community. Firstly, it will benefit people with sight loss by presenting them with an alternative to traditional AD that provides an experience that is both informative and entertaining. The enhanced AD track will also foster closer links between sighted and visually impaired film and TV audiences by encouraging them to share the same soundtrack. As a result, this project encourages social inclusivity through digital audio.
Secondly, the project benefits artists working within the creative industries, including screenwriters, sound recordists, sound editors, dubbing mixers, actors and directors, by inviting them to apply their talent to the accessibility sector, thus, regaining control over the finished product.
Thirdly, the research has an impact on the film, television, interactive media and technology industries by exploring cost-effective and practical ways to incorporate accessibility measures to the current workflows, while also uncovering new potential for existing digital technologies.
Finally, the accessibility sector, in particular those organisations specialising in AD, would be integrated into the creative process by working closely with members of the production and postproduction teams and providing advice on accessibility.

Description Principal Investigator, Professor Mariana López, receives regular invitations to give presentations on the Enhancing Audio Description project both nationally and internationally, as well as requests for collaboration from filmmakers. We have received messages from accessibility practitioners both in the UK and abroad letting us know how the project encouraged them to rethink accessibility. Sound designers have mentioned that learning more about the project has allowed them to consider how their design for films could be made accessible from the offset. Furthermore, we are currently working on collaborations with filmmakers both in the UK and abroad, and the BFI has put the research team in touch with a number of productions that seek to use our methods to make their films accessible. The research project has also caught the attention of sound designers working in innovative productions in Uruguay and accessibility companies in Canada. We have also been contacted by a number of theatre companies seeking advise on how to adapt our guidelines to their work. The director of the Eleanor Worthington Prize has included audio description requirements after attending the Conference on Accessibility in Film, Television and Interactive Media organised as part of the project, and regularly recognises the effect of the project on their decision. Project findings have also been featured in press releases, resulting in interviews for RNIB Connect Radio and BBC World Service's Digital Planet. In addition to this, Principal Investigator Professor Mariana López has seen an increase in the number of requests for PhD supervision in the field, and is currently supervising 2 projects in this field: one related to accessibility strategies in television and the other linked to the cinematic experiences of visually impaired people in relation to sound perception. She has also examined a doctoral project on accessibility linked to gaming, VR and autism and is supervising a project on narrative structures and ADHD. Co-Investigator Professor Gavin Kearney, also supervised an MSc by Research that looked into furthering some of the technical developments started during the project.

Results and Impact This tutorial presents the concepts, processes, and results linked to the Enhancing Audio Description project (funded by AHRC, UK), which seeks to provide accessible audio-visual experiences to visually impaired audiences using sound design techniques and spatialization. Film grammars have been developed throughout film history, but such languages have matured with sighted audiences in mind and assuming that seeing is more important than hearing. We will challenge such assumptions by demonstrating how sound effects, first person narration as well as breaking the rules of sound mixing, can allow us to create accessible versions of films that are true to the filmmaker's conception. We will also discuss how the guidelines developed have been applied to the higher education context to train filmmakers on the importance of sound.

Results and Impact Throughout the years digital technologies have been used to improve the mode of delivery of Audio Description for film, television and live events. However, the notions behind its design have been mostly unchanged despite significant advancements in digital sound. AD guidelines have failed to acknowledge how advancements in digital audio could be game-changers in the process of conveying information as well as providing an entertaining experience to visually impaired audiences.
This presentation discussed how sound design can be integrated to AD processes through the use of additional audio recordings and surround sound rendering; all of which could reduce the number of descriptions needed. The use of surround sound was proposed to provide an accurate rendition of character and object positions in space, types of shot, camera movements, camera angles and depth of frame. The application of first person descriptions by the main characters was also discussed.

Results and Impact This paper presents the concepts, processes and results linked to the Enhancing Audio Description project (funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council), which seeks to provide accessible audio-visual experiences to visually impaired audiences using sound design techniques and binaural audio. Film grammars have been developed throughout film history, but such languages have matured with sighted audiences in mind and assuming that seeing is more important than hearing. This presentation challenges such assumptions by demonstrating how sound effects, first person narration as well as breaking the conventions of sound mixing, can allow us to create accessible versions of films that are true to the filmmaker's conception. The presentation will discuss 'Pearl', a short film used as a case study whose sound was re-designed with the input of visually impaired volunteers to provide an accessible yet engaging experience that can be shared regardless of audiences' sight condition. We will also discuss how the guidelines developed have been applied in the context of higher education to train filmmakers on the importance of sound.

Results and Impact Guest session for Audio Engineering Society UK.

This talk presented the concepts, processes and results linked to the Enhancing Audio Description project (funded by the AHRC), which seeks to provide accessible audio-visual experiences to visually impaired audiences using sound design techniques and spatialisation.

Results and Impact Mariana Lopez and Gavin Kearney presented a tutorial session as part of the AES Convention in Berlin. The abstract for the presentation is the following: "Audio Description (AD) is a pre-recorded verbal commentary that is added to a film or television programme to make visual elements clearer to visually impaired audiences. One of the disadvantages of AD is that the addition of a layer of verbal commentary means that elements from the original soundtrack are masked and valuable information on the film as well as part of the intended engagement is lost. The Enhancing Audio Description proposes to use binaural audio to reduce the number of verbal descriptions used for accessibility, by using accurately placed sound elements to give audiences information on the position of characters and objects in space as well as information on cinematic elements such as high and low camera angles and shots."

Form Of Engagement Activity A talk or presentation

Primary Audience Public/other audiences
Results and Impact Since the 1970s Audio Description (AD) has been making visual content accessible to visually impaired people through sound. In film and television a pre-recorded audio commentary provides information that clarifies the narrative, such as descriptions on actions, gestures and places. Although, throughout the years, digital technologies have been used to improve the mode of delivery of AD, the notions behind its design have been mostly unchanged despite significant advancements in the field of digital sound production and postproduction. This interactive talk introduced participants to the history of sound design and accessibility in film and TV and explored the speakers' own research on the use of surround sound rendering, interactive media systems and first person narration to create more engaging and spatially accurate soundtracks.
