Translating an Exhibition. Co-producing Local Responses to Transnational Research.

Abstract

The aim of this proposal for follow-on funding is to develop the collaborative practices of the Transnationalizing Modern Languages (TML) project, one of the large AHRC grant under the Translating Cultures theme. Since 2014 TML has been investigating the development of modern Italian culture and its interactions with other cultures in contexts of migration. The project has also been developing innovative research and pedagogy practices, based on knowledge exchange and the co-production of research outputs with the subjects of its research - i.e. the people, artists and cultural associations that have shared memories and materials through the project's fieldwork. The exhibition "Beyond Borders: Transnational Italy" is a major output of TML and displays examples of people's experience of Italian culture from across the globe. Photographs, audio and visual recordings, art installations and other materials gathered through the fieldwork are mounted in a series of augmented reality installations produced in close collaboration with the subjects of research and a team of professional Art curators and software developers, Routes Agency. The exhibition represents the most advanced contribution of TML to the innovation of research practices and ideas of academic knowledge.

This proposal aims to bring the project exhibition for the first time into a Mediterranean country connected to Italy via historical and contemporary circuits of migration, namely Tunisia. In this multilingual and multicultural context, where Italian is very popular across multiple sectors of the society, this project will provide to teachers and learners of Italian, as well as to the wider Arabophone and Francophone public, the opportunity to consider the local development of Italian heritage in the light of the wider transnational context explored by TML. As partners in activities of the project, the Italian Cultural Institute and La Manouba University will ensure the engagement of students and audiences of their networks. Beyond the metropolitan context of Tunis, the project will address women and community associations through the involvement of COSPE Onlus, the NGO partner of the initiative.

The exhibition at the Italian Cultural Institute in Tunis will be at the center of a series of activities for targeted audiences, including a workshop hosted by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of La Manouba University. The main outcome of the workshop, convened by Dr. Barbara Spadaro and Routes Agency, will be a series of new installations for the TML exhibit, co-produced with Tunisian students as a response to the TML project to show the multicultural and multilingual context of Tunisia. The participants in the workshop will be exposed to innovative research and curatorial practices, and invited to reflect critically on the processes of memorialization and translation of the different cultures and languages that characterize the Tunisian context. The participants will learn how to translate in multi-sensorial and multi-media installation their own research. In so doing they will provide both feedback and a continuation of TML research on memory, translation and transculturality, while contributing to the development of new forms of knowledge exchange. The project will give to the PI and her non-academic partners (namely Routes Agency) the opportunity to develop further the impact activities of TML in the specific context of Dr Spadaro's research, where she will be also exploring further need and opportunities to apply her research in practical contexts. While training her skills for project management, the project will feed into the process of self-evaluation of the Translating Culture Theme and contribute to its overall legacy.

Planned Impact

The aim of this proposal for follow-on funding is to engage new audiences with the TML project, by bringing the project exhibition to the Italian Cultural Institute (ICI) in Tunis as a basis for the development of a series of activities for targeted audiences and a workshop producing a local TML exhibition. The project will feed into the process of self-evaluation and self-reflection of TML, notably its practices of the co-production of research with its partner Routes Agency and the new non-academic partners of this application.

Beyond its academic impact, the project will benefit audiences all of which are profoundly interested and invested in, and would benefit from understanding of, cross-cultural exchange, such as language teachers and learners as well as the communities that will be involved in the fieldwork of the participants to the workshop.This proposal is based on close collaboration with the ICI and COSPE Onlus, acting as partners and facilitators of the project. The ICI of Tunis will advertise both exhibitions - the TML exhibition and the exhibit of the new installations that will be co-produced through the workshop - as widely as possible across its networks and audiences. They will ensure that groups from schools and cultural institutions across Tunisia, as well as locally based artists and writers whose work addresses similar themes, will see and interact with the exhibits, and they will assist the PI in organizing appropriate events and visits.

The ICI is both a beneficiary and a facilitator in the project. The promotion and dissemination of the TML exhibition Beyond Borders: Transnational Italy fulfils their mission of enhancing understanding of Italian heritage in Tunisia and of support to a wide and established network of educational institutions and associations that offer courses of Italian. This proposal will provide teachers and learners of Italian in Tunisia with the opportunity to consider the local development of Italian heritage in the light of the wider transnational context explored by TML.
This proposal enhances the value of the multilingual education practices established in Tunisia, where Italian is historically very popular. The ICI will ensure that the project benefits from considerable visibility among educational authorities and policy-makers across the Mediterranean. The ICI will create a forum dedicated to this project on its website, and guarantee that it resonates through the global network of the Italian cultural institutes via the institutional website Portale della Lingua Italiana (https://www.linguaitaliana.esteri.it/) and the 2018 Italia-Cultura-Mediterraneo programme endorsed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Some students will gain professional experience as Translators and Editors for these contents.

The installations co-produced at La Manouba will be mounted in a second exhibition that will open at the ICI at the end of the workshop. This is expected to have considerable impact among the communities from which the students will gather their research material. These communities will have the opportunity to see and engage with their histories translated into the global context of the TML research, and to experience through interactive installations new ways to convey and share their cultural heritage. They will be exposed to fresh understanding of the multicultural and multilingual context of Tunisia.

The exhibits and the workshop will address audiences made up of people from different parts of Tunisia, beyond the metropolitan environment of Tunis. COSPE will facilitate the engagement of students of English and Humanities involved in their projects in the town of Jendouba, in North-West Tunisia, with the workshop at La Manouba University. In order to explore further local needs and opportunities for knowledge exchange, COSPE Onlus will also introduce Barbara Spadaro to the Rayhana Women's Association of Jendouba.

Title "Beyond Borders, Transnational Italy in Tunis" 
Description This is the exhibition of the Transnationalizing Modern Languages (TML) research project at the Italian Cultural Institute in Tunis, featuring the artwork developed through this Follow-on funding grant. The new artworks are: 1) a new interactive installation ("La Tabouna") made with Tunisian students and the curators of the early TML exhibition during a workshop at La Manouba University; 2) the video "Zoom on Dar Rayhana" produced with the Radio Rayhana Team as outcome of a workshop with the PI and the TML Artist in residence, the photographer Mario Badagliacca; 3) a new series of artworks for the series "Italy is Out", by Mario Badagliacca. This exhibition featured for the first time in Tunisia the comics of Takoua Ben Mohamed, a Tunisian born, Rome-based graphic journalist and participant to the TML research project via Dr Spadaro's research.

Impact The exhibition contributed to innovate local pedagogy in Italian at multiple levels. Language Teachers of the IIC organised visits to the exhibition with their students and introduced comics in their syllabus. Language teachers of the Tunis district and their Chief Inspector of the Tunisian Ministry of Education invited the PI as keynote speaker for their annual retreat "Scuola & Territorio" in Tozeur. An invited lecture on the intercultural comics of Takoua Ben Mohamed was delivered by the PI at the Institut Supérieur des Langues de Tunis, ISLT. The exhibition allowed the ICI to participate to the design of a forthcoming strand of cultural initiatives on comics within the network of international cultural institutes in Tunisia, via the involvement of Takoua Ben Mohamed. The exhibition raised awareness of the pedagogic resources of the Italian Cultural Institute of Tunis (ie Library, Language Courses, Exhibition Space, Cultural Events) among students from the great metropolitan district of Tunis and beyond. The involvement of the Dar Rayhana Association of the Women of Jendouba via the NGO COSPE brought for the first time visitors from the district of Jendouba to the ICI and to an exhibition space. This has been the first interactive exhibition featured in Tunis and has attracted academics, media professionals, artists and visitors interested in the development of immersive environments. The exhibition has been recommended to students and postgraduates of the Faculty of Architecture and Design of Sidi Bou Said and by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of La Manouba University. The exhibition has also been recommended by professionals of the media platform Inkyfada as an engaging example of communication of research findings.

Description The award developed the capacity of the PI to lead and manage grants in ODA countries. This grant represented an opportunity for the PI to develop skills for managing multilingual projects involving a wide range of stakeholders, ie partner institutions, contractors, community organization, participants to the research, home institution, and the funding body. Meeting one of the key objectives of this Follow-on Funding grant, the project has trained the PI in budget and resource management, administration (of different institutions with their languages, currencies and procedures), ethics and risk assessment, VISA application processes in Tunisia and the UK, custom regulation (for the shipping of the exhibition and further equipment to Tunisia and back to the UK), staff and contractors management in ODA countries, grant and report writing. The grant has also further developed the skills of the PI in translation and interpreting, planning and conducting fieldwork, organization of events, communication and dissemination of research, teaching, community work and public engagement. The PI was based in Tunis for the four months of the project, developing her knowledge of the context of the research and expanding the network of perspective research partners in Tunisia and Europe. Through a secondment to the Dar Rayahana Association of Women of Jendouba the PI has explored needs and opportunities to apply her research in a practical context of community work.

This Follow-on funding grant achieved the objectives to: 1) bring the TML project and exhibition beyond its early linguistic and geographical context (ie in the Arabophone and Francophone context of Tunisia); 2) develop a new strands of collaborations, activities and outputs with project partners (notably the NGO COSPE Onlus, the Dar Rayhana Association of Women of Jendouba, the Italian Cultural Institute of Tunis, the University of La Manouba); 3) reflect on the practices and methodologies of the TML project in order to contribute to their legacy and further applications; 4) reflect and contribute to the legacy of the AHRC 'Translating Cultures' Theme, particularly in capacity building.

A key finding of this grant is the demand for multilingual, interdisciplinary and transnational education practices in Tunisia, particularly among the youth and teachers from marginalised areas of the country. This reflects the social and cultural changes of the post-revolutionary context and the increasing demand for equal participation in global cultural mobility and exchange, beyond the historical circuits of Francophone cultural initiatives and industries (see also under Impact summary). Both workshops of the project (at La Manouba University and Radio Rayhana) have demonstrated the investment of young Tunisian in English and Arabic as languages for social and cultural mobility, against a curriculum still dominated by French and Italian as a heritage of the colonial past and the migratory flows in the Mediterranean.

The grant represented a significant opportunity to acquire knowledge on aspects of collaboration, co-production, sustainability, accessibility and ownership of outputs of research in ODA countries. A key finding of the project is the importance to develop flexible outputs that may be accessed, transported, modified and re-used by researchers and participants. This was only partially achieved due to the different and eventually incompatible agendas of the contractors, researcher and participants involved in this project.
Exploitation Route Media professionals, art curators, artists and developers, cultural institutions, local and community associations may take forward the findings of this grant through further collaborative and transnational projects. Language teachers based in Tunisia are exposed to the linguistic and cultural tensions described above and would represent ideal partners for projects in the Digital Humanities and Creative Industries from different countries.

Description The "Beyond Borders, Transnational Italy" exhibition in Tunis has been visited by hundreds of students, teachers, cultural activits, NGO practictioners, media professionals, and policymakers. The feedback to the two workshops (at La Manouba University and at the Dar Rayhana Association of the Women of Jendouba) and the series of guided tours conducted by the PI have shown the demand for multilingual, interdisciplinary and transnational education practices in Tunisia, particularly among the youth and people involved in the networks for the sustainable education and development. This reflects the social and cultural changes of the post-revolutionary context and the increasing demand of Tunisians for equal participation in the circuits and industries of global cultural mobility and exchange. The participants to the workshops and the visitors to the exhibition have expressed the desire to explore and translate their multilingual and multicultural heritage into a wider global context with the tools and media featured by the project. The exhibition and related activities conducted around it (particularly guided tours with the PI) have attracted a strong demand for engagement in collaborative projects for the creation of interactive installations and multimedia outputs that enhance the vernacular, Arab and global aspects of the cultural background of Tunisians, including (but not limited to) Italian and European background. This exhibition featured for the first time the comics of Takoua Ben Mohamed, a Tunisian born, Rome-based graphic journalist. Language Teachers who discovered Ben Mohamed's comics at the Exhibition introduced comics in their syllabus, and the PI has been invited as keynote speakers from a number of institutions and associations in Tunisia, Morocco and the UK (see Awards). The exhibition was recommended by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of La Manouba University in his written feedback that stress the pedagogic value of the project for the students of his institution. This grant has been acknowledged by the COSPE Tunisia representative Alessia Tibollo "as a unique and innovative project bringing together Academic and International cultural institutions with local community associations and students". This format has been recommended as the way forward for projects that may involve Tunisian youth and women's and community organisation through their networks for sustainable education and development. In 2022-23. the publication of the book 'Italy is Out' has further disseminated the impact of the project in Tunisia. Copies of the book published by Liverpool University press have been sent to colleagues and participants to the project, and plans for a book launch at the Italian Cultural Institute of Tunis and at La Manouba University are on the way. The arrival of the book in Tunis in 2023 has refreshed informal networks between the Italian community in Tunis, the PI of the project, and the artist in residence after Covid, contributing to establishing a positive and constructive perspective for future collaborations.

PI Contribution The PI offered her time, research and skills to develop opportunities for knowledge exchange with Tunisian students based outside the metropolitan context of Tunis. She involved the Artist in Residence of the TML project in the workshop with the Radio Rayhana team in Jendouba. The PI invited representatives of COSPE and Radio Rayhana Jendouba to LIverpool for the final project event that took place in November 2018.
Collaborator Contribution COSPE acted as a facilitator between the PI and the Dar Rayhana association of the women of Jendouba, that hosted the PI secondment in Jendouba and the subsequent project workshop with the Radio Rayhana team. COSPE representatives provided contacts and feedback on the development of the project. They also provided assistance with the mobility of participants to the project inside and outside Tunisia.

PI Contribution The PI delivered a workshop with the curators and developers of the exhibition "Beyond Borders, Transnational Italy" for students of La Manouba University.The workshop was offered as an optional MA Unit of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. The workshop introduced students to the theoretical and methodological findings of the TML project on memory and translation of Italian culture via the exhibition. The workshop was taught with the curators and developers of the exhibition, and produced an interactive installation that was exhibited at the ICI in February 2019.
Collaborator Contribution The Faculty of Arts and Humanities of La Manouba University provided teaching facilities for the workshop. The Dean of the Faculty facilitated the involvement of the PI in a number of academic and cultural events taking place in Tunis during the project, helping with the development of her networks and the visibility of the project.
Impact The workshop at La Manouba University produced the interactive installation "La Tabouna" that was exhibited at the ICI in February 2019.

Results and Impact Between December 2017 and March 2018, the PI has conducted more than 20 guided tours to the exhibition for groups from schools and universities, media professionals, cultural organizations (f.e. L'Art Rue and Dreamcity festival), NGOs, cultural and diplomatic institutions based in Tunisia (f.e. the British Council, the Italian Embassy, the EUNIC network).
In addition to these group tours, the PI has conducted a number of individual visits for policymakers and politicians - ie MPs, Deans of Faculties (Arts and Humanities and Architecture) and the Chief Editor of the Media Platform Inkyfada. These have led to the recommendation of the exhibition across Higher Education institutions and other bodies, f.e. the written feedback of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of La Manouba University.
This activity has been crucial to engage the audiences with different aspects of the TML research project - ie the transnational approach on Italian cultural mobility and the transformative ambition on research and teaching practices. (See impact narrative).
During the visits, the artworks (notably Takoua ben Mohamed's comics) and the interactive installations of the exhibition have been at the center of discussion about cultural belonging, heritage, diasporas, migration, the role of religion, gender and language in the processes of identification of people from Tunisia and Italy. These discussions fed into the PI's research, the evaluation of the project and networking activities.
Some school groups have video recorded the experience and posted it on Facebook. These videos and posts are available on the TML project Facebook page.

Results and Impact Interview series on the exhibition "Beyond Borders, Transnational Italy" at the ICI Tunis, for the Italian broadcast of Radio Tunisie Chaine Internationale.

The PI delivered a series of radio broadcasts for the multilingual international radio RTCI with participants to different strands of the projects, and notably: the exhibition curator Giulia Grechi and the graphic journalist Takoua Ben Mohamed (December 2018); the inspector of the Ministry of Tunisian Education and Chair of the Association of teachers of Italian in Tunisia, Prof Hammadi Agrebi (December 2017); Prof Renata Pepicelli from the University of Pisa (February 2018); Students of the Institut Superieur des Langues de Tunis (March 2018). RTCI is widely followed in the country and across the Tunisian communities in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
