Guernica Remakings, North with South: research into the practice of cross-cultural translation through making, impact and engagement.

Lead Research Organisation: University of Brighton
Department Name: Sch of Humanities

Abstract

Post-apartheid South Africa (1994) and post-colonial Mauritius (1968) both have a socio-political legacy of oppression within their respective histories. Access to the arts was denied to the majority of South Africans prior to 1994 and stark imbalances still remain. In Mauritius the legacy of slavery and indentured servitude are still found at the root cause of societal divisions. This history is described in the Mauritian Truth and Justice Commission Report published in 2011 as "still open wounds that may fester if deliberate measures are not taken for national reconciliation"(31). In line with arts and culture policy in both countries there is an emphasis placed on the promotion of the arts and culture to address social injustice. Notably after years of neglect within mainstream trade and industry policy the creative industries are also now being recognised as an important growth area for the economies of Low and Middle income countries, including South Africa and Mauritius. It is within this context and in line with arts and culture policy in both countries this project focuses on art practice in sustainable development: encouraging creative excellence, empowering creative individuals and promoting and developing international networks in the arts. This will be realised through a tour of the exhibition Guernica Remakings, the formation of a Learning Lab that accompanies the exhibition and the distribution of the video documentation of the exhibition and the Lab.

The Learning Lab consciously creates a democratic environment that will foster discussion on art and social change, support the development of professional art practice through peer to peer collaboration and exchange with artists in residence, and expand the artistic networks of participating artists and Project Partners. Insights and best practice will permeate beyond participants to peers and related organisations; beneficiaries will grow exponentially through the dissemination of the documentary videos of the Learning Lab and the Guernica Remakings exhibition.

This project, Guernica Remakings, North with South, builds upon the AHRC funded research: Guernica Remakings, South Africa and continues work with the Project Partner the Keiskamma Art Project. Located in the Eastern Cape, in the poorest region of South Africa, the Art Project has remade Guernica four times since 2010. Their translation of Picasso's iconic anti-fascist artwork transforms its geography, time and narrative from: Spain to South Africa, from the early 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century, from anti-fascism to the HIV/AIDS crisis. The research project focused upon this process of cross-cultural translation through the creation of a fifth Keiskamma Guernica and asked why Guernica? Captured in the 12 part video documentary are some of the supportive, collaborative art making practices developed through the Art Project. Consequently the aims of this follow-on project include:

1.To transfer learning about key empowering collaborative activist art practices through the effective cross-cultural translation of Guernica.
2.To reach new audiences beyond conventional gallery visitors.
3.To develop deep and mutual partnerships with artist led organisations to co-produce knowledge and understanding of the role of art in sustainable international development to inform best practice.
4.To co-create a resource to inform best practice regarding the role of art in sustainable international development.

Planned Impact

Guernica Remakings, North with South contributes towards the effective use of art in sustainable international development and the welfare of people primarily from the ODA recipient countries of South Africa and Mauritius. After years of neglect within mainstream trade and industry policy the creative industries are now being recognised as an important growth area for the economies of Low and Middle Income countries, including South Africa and Mauritius. Project Partners include the South African Keiskamma Art Project and the pan-Indian Island organisation pARTage. The Keiskamma Art Project gives employment to over 100 from the villages of Hamburg and Bodiam in the Eastern Cape that work as a collective. pARTage, in contrast, is an umbrella organisation for individual artists living within the Islands of the Indian Ocean Region (Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Reunion and the Seychelles). Within this project the Guernica Remakings exhibition is set to tour around the UK and to Mauritius. The exhibition creates an inspiring environment in which to foster cultural exchange and creative dialogue between artistic communities through a programme of activities that forms a Learning Lab. The Learning Lab in Mauritius will complement and work with the international two-week workshop run by pARTage in April 2019 in which four Keiskamma Art Project artists will participate, alongside pARTage artists, and other international artists. pARTage has an established history of running international workshops for both emerging artists and established artists creating a supportive and stimulating environment to help further their art practice and to foster transnational creative dialogue on contemporary art.

This Follow-on project through the Learning Lab that accompanies the touring Guernica Remakings exhibition consciously creates a democratic environment that will foster discussion on art and social change, support the development of professional art practice through peer to peer collaboration and exchange with artists in residence, and expand the artistic networks of participating artists and Project Partners. Insights and best practice will permeate beyond participants to peers and related organisations; beneficiaries will grow exponentially through the dissemination of the documentary videos of the Learning Lab and the Guernica Remakings exhibition.

Title Guernica Poetica
Description So Mayer and Richard Price were co-commissioned by The National Poetry Library and curator / PI Nicola Ashmore to respond to four symbols each from Guernica in poetic form. This formed a new artwork displayed for the first time at the National Poetry Library as part of the Guernica Remakings exhibition July - September 2019. The poetic response was displayed on a large scale vinyl print and as audio recordings within the exhibition. Live poetry readings also took place as part of the opening of the exhibition.
Type Of Art Creative Writing
Year Produced 2019
Impact Future iterations of the poetic response to Guernica are now planned, to be incorporated into the ongoing Guernica Remakings exhibition.

Title Guernica Remakings North with South
Description This is a documentary film of 54:50 minutes in length. It functions as both a record and a resource of the Guernica Remakings exhibition tour and related activities that took place in 2019.
Type Of Art Film/Video/Animation
Year Produced 2020
Impact Evidenced within the film is the impact of this research and how it has advanced collective solidarity and agency within diverse groups and organisations (Keiskamma Art Project, pARTage, Future Hope, Mauritius); created new forms of cultural connection and activist engagement (National Poetry Library, Working Class Movement Library and Kids Guernica); and influenced organisational communication and working practices (Keiskamma Art Project, Future Hope). The film shows the creative workshops and exhibition tours that have brought together 9 international artists and 11 cultural organisations and their local communities in the UK, Mauritius and South Africa, Ashmore's Guernica Remakings has created vital spaces for collaborative reflection upon challenging issues within and across specific locales and cultures. Comprised of maker spaces, public talks and reflections on the making process - facilitated by Ashmore's film documentation of these processes - the workshops have built trusting relationships and given voice to marginalised groups beyond their locale. The film documents the impact of this project and how it has created new cultural connections and forms of activist engagement. For each installation of the Guernica Remakings Exhibition, featured in the film, responds to its location by incorporating contextual materials and inviting local artist and public responses to the work. At the National Poetry Library, London (2019) two poets were commissioned by Ashmore and Chris McCabe, National Poetry Librarian, to write a poetic response to the exhibition which, alongside a public reading, impacted public participation with the work and saw over thirty visual and poetic responses from the general public to the call "what is your Guernica". People displayed their work in the dedicated display space in the exhibition. Ashmore's Guernica Remakings project has initiated further cultural iterations across 3 countries (UK, South Africa, Mauritius,) involving 9 individual artists and 4 artist collectives. Notably Saradha Soobrayen's Chagosnica (2017-2019) - explored the forcible removal of Chagossians from the Chagos islands by the UK government between 1971-1973. This was inspired by the Guernica Remakings 2017 exhibition in Brighton. Ashmore collaborated on the 2019 tour with 3 international artists, 5 artists from the Keiskamma Art Project, local Mauritian arts organisations, and children's charity Future Hope. This enabled 50 children from disadvantaged families in Port Louis (many of whom do not go to school) to explore their visions of the future and promote a message of peace, through the production of their own Kids Guernica, Mauritius (2019) on a large scale canvas. This has since been exhibited in Japan. The collaborative art making process helped facilitate dialogue 'between different cultures, respecting each identity..to create a community all around the world with children'.

Title Guernica Remakings at the Working Class Movement Library 31 January - 20 March 2019
Description Picasso's Guernica came to Manchester 80 years ago on the 1 - 15 February 1939. It was displayed at the former HE Nuns & Co Ford car showroom at the corner of Victoria Street and Cateaton Street. The Guernica Remakings exhibition was in nearby Salford, it was open from 31 January until 20 March of 2019 at the Working Class Movement Library. The exhibition was open to the public on Wednesdays to Fridays 1-5pm, and the first Saturday of most months 10am-4pm. The Working Class Movement Library holds a particular significance to the Guernica Remakings project - on 12 October 2013 it hosted one of the fourteen public sewings in which the Remaking Picasso's Guernica a Protest Banner was created. The 2019 exhibition saw the return of the banner after six years.

Title Guernica Remakings pop up exhibition at the Roche Bois Social Welfare Centre, Wednesday 17 April 2019
Description This pop up version of the Guernica Remakings exhibition was hung from fences and architectural beams around the courtyard area of the Roche Bois Welfare Centre. The children involved with the charity Future Hope who were composing and painting a Kids Guernica mural helped install the exhibition. The mural was being facilitated by Savina Tarsitano of Kids Guernica and Jamel Colin of Future Hope.
Type Of Art Artistic/Creative Exhibition
Year Produced 2019
Impact None of the children participating in the Kids Guernica workshop had been to see the Guernica Remakings exhibition in rose Hill - 40 minutes away on the bus. This pop up version enabled them to locate their Kids Guernica mural in an expanded visual and political context that began with Picasso's painting Guernica and the aerial bombardment of the civilian population of Gernika in northern Spain on 26 April 1937.

Description The work funded encompassed an international exhibition tour that took place in 2019, related public performances, talks and workshops. New artistic work was commissioned all of which was documented in a 55 minute long film. The film functions as both a record and a resource of the Guernica Remakings exhibition tour. The film documents the impact of this project and how it has created new cultural connections and forms of activist engagement.
Exploitation Route I am working on a second edition of the Guernica Remakings book to incorporate the 2019 tour to be distributed to all of those involved and made available to the general public.

Description Guernica Remakings North with South saw the international tour in 2019 of the Guernica Remakings exhibition to 3 locations (The Working Class Movement Library, UK; The Plaza in Rose Hill, Mauritius and the National Poetry Library, in the Southbank Centre, UK). The 2019 tour was timely marking 80 years from the tour of Picasso's Guernica to the UK and beyond. The Guernica Remakings exhibition develops knowledge and understanding of 21st century activist art practices inspired by Picasso's Guernica. The exhibition changes with each location by inviting local artists and members of the public to respond to the work. The societal impact of this project is in the form of the generation of 4 new creative outputs involving the participation of 5 artists and 50 children. The general public also responded to the call in the exhibition "What is your Guernica" generating over 60 creative responses. The largest of the creative outputs from this tour, the Kid's Guernica peace painting has been exhibited internationally. It was made in collaboration with 50 children from NGO Future Hope, Mauritius. It has facilitated cross cultural dialogue on collaborative art making and peace. This canvas was exhibited in Japan in 2019 and Italy in 2020/21 showcasing an international range of Kid's Guernica artworks. In October 2022 it was exhibited twice in South Africa as part of the Guernica Remakings exhibition and learning lab. The canvas facilitated and developed cross cultural understandings of peace developed through the discussion and study of the visual language present. This impact involved 55 workshop participants in the rural setting of Hamburg, South Africa and 27 workshop participants in the urban Walmer Township in Gqeberha, South Africa.

Results and Impact On Wednesday 18 November 2020 I gave a presentation at King's College London, Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies. This is the summary of the talk:

Picasso's iconic artwork of 1937 is explored anew through a series of 21st century remakings by Dr Nicola Ashmore curator of the touring exhibition Guernica Remakings.
Guernica Remakings features artwork from across the globe that creates resonances with the original work and reveals a range of cultural and political histories from Spain, to Afghanistan, Canada, the Chagos Islands, India, Iraq, Palestine, South Africa, Syria and the UK. Dr Ashmore will share her evolving understanding of Picasso's Guernica through the lens of a selection of 21st century translations.

This sparked questions and discussions focused upon my research methodologies, and further engagement in the Guernica remakings project through the viewing of a number of the related films.
