Shaping Spaces - Architectural Models in Context.

Lead Research Organisation: Victoria and Albert Museum
Department Name: Research

Abstract

Shaping Spaces - Architectural Models in Context is an outreach programme with engagement and learning at its heart. An exhibition of architectural models, drawn from a range of practitioners and makers, will provide a visual focal point for a survey and celebration of the making and use of architectural models and the pivotal role they play in the design process, both historically and today. A rich events programme will target, and serve the needs of, different audiences.

The Architectural Models Network, an AHRC-funded international research network, brings together those interested in the history, current practice and future of architectural model-making. Through its collaboration with the Building Centre, the Network will share the results of its work with, and have an impact on, diverse audiences.

The V&A Research Institute, MAP (Models and simulations for architecture and heritage, CNRS laboratory) and the Building Centre will collaborate to curate and deliver the 'Shaping Spaces' exhibition and accompanying public programme, free to visitors.

Featuring work by a wide range of makers, the exhibition will provide a striking visual display of innovative and inspiring architectural models accompanied by interpretation, sharing the importance of this form of design expression over time. Thanks to the collaboration with MAP the exhibition will also present cutting-edge digital technologies for the public interpretation of architectural models.

The exhibition will be hosted by The Building Centre. Established in 1931, it promotes innovation in the built environment with an internationally-recognised public programme to inspire, inform and educate. Its audience is comprised of construction industry professionals, but central to its history and ethos is the ambition of raising awareness among and delivering information to the general public. The Centre receives 18,500 physical visitors per month.

Free guided tours will explore the topics presented in the exhibition. A blog series on the Network's and on the Building Centre's websites will respond to the show. The Building Centre's website has 40,000 unique visitors per month. A Twitter campaign for the Centre's 22,000 followers will feature an architectural model on display each week and similar initiatives will be run through the Network's social media channels.
As part of the public programme, a series of workshops for architects and model-makers, Key Stage 2-5 children and teachers will be run by a trained educator and a professional model-maker or architect, thanks to links formed by the Network with a variety of professionals, who have shown great interest in the project.

Workshops for professionals will examine model-making in a wider context, exploring how other creative industries use models. These events will offer opportunities for sharing best practice and will investigate how physical models and interactive technologies combine to help engage audiences and communicate ideas.

Workshops for schools will illuminate problem-solving through model making and the properties of materials. Cross Curricular links built by the workshops include: DT, Art, Physics, Media, Maths, English, Citizenship and Geography. A workshop for teachers will provide Continuing Professional Development.

Legacy Materials, such as learning plans and resources, will be produced and made freely available on the Network's and the Building Centre's websites.

A commissioned short film of interviews with architects and model-makers will be shared amongst the Network partner institutions, together with short films documenting our events, to expand the reach and maximise impact.

We will produce a publication to present in an accessible way the results of the Network's work, a flyer will detail the models on show in the exhibition and list events.

Planned Impact

The funding will allow the Architectural Models Network to take results from its research to a wider and new audience including schools, architecture schools, architectural practices and the public realm. Academic audiences - though not at the centre of this project - will also benefit from the project.

Some of the partners of the original network will collaborate with new institutions. In particular with the Built Environment Trust (BET) at the Building Centre, an ideal partner to reach and engage professionals and the building industry.

The BET will support the project with four staff members, also further liaising with industry partners and professional bodies who have already indicated significant interest.

The free Exhibition and workshops, hosted in a central London location, will establish a much needed platform for all those interested in architectural models. They will facilitate the sharing of knowledge and skills, amplified by posts on the Network's and Building Centre's websites/ social media channels. We will create a hub for unique material on model- making in all its forms.

The widening participation workshops will impact on school children and facilitate the use of architectural models as a teaching resource, leading to skill-focused learning delivery. Participation will foster creative problem solving, critical engagement with environment considerations and different techniques for communicating design work. Teachers will be able to access a pedagogical framework based on embodied cognition, that could lead to project-based learning beyond the exhibition, using legacy resources. By fostering meaningful connections between industry, schools and museums, we will encourage deep engagement with pupils that could lead to access to careers in the cultural sector.

This will be the first opportunity to develop and run a workshop for teachers on model making and embodied learning. It will enable interaction with school professionals and the collection of feedback on a different level than possible so far.

Such data will feed into the V&A Research Institute's work, in particular the Andrew W. Mellon funded 'Encounters on the Shop Floor' project, a collaboration with artists, makers and academic/ cultural institutions such as UCL, Imperial College, Royal College of Music and Tate. The follow-on project will have academic impact, helping to inform an embodied learning pedagogy. Embodied learning involves a full sensorial engagement, situated in social exchanges and promotes learning that changes patterns of thinking/acting (Addison & Burgess 2007). The funding will allow to develop and test -together with teachers- strategies for applying such methodologies.

The project will also have an impact on the delivery of educational programmes in institutions which are part of the original Network (V&A, RIBA, Sir John Soane's Museum) and more widely in the sector through legacy material. The Building
Centre does not currently run programmes of this kind and aims to acquire skills to engage young audiences.

Funding will enable to widen the collaboration between cultural organisations and the project partner 'Models and simulations for architecture and heritage' (CNRS Laboratory) in the field of digital humanities reflecting on the opportunities and challenges posed by fast developing technologies for the scanning and digital 3D representation of models. The collaboration so far contributed to inform the way MAP is developing experimental tools. Funding will enable to develop ways of sharing these results -and similar academic outputs- with the general public, enhancing significantly the impact of the Network's work.

Results will also be shared by the individual partners at academic conferences in different disciplines and the project will produce at least one academic article.

Title Wooden architectural model of the Royal Albert Hall created by Dr. Simona Valeriani of the V&A and Scott Miller of the University of Manchester
Description Wooden architectural model of the Royal Albert Hall created by Dr. Simona Valeriani of the V&A and Scott Miller of the University, with shipping and storage case. The Model consists of a main body representing ¾ of the building, a separate quarter which can be slotted in, and a detachable roof construction. The detachable quarter is a scaled down 'replica' (1:125) of the fragment of an original working model (1/4''=1'-0; ca 1:48) used in the 1860s to develop the Royal Albert Hall's design, which survives in the Royal Albert Hall's archive. The remaining portions of the building have been reconstructed using clues contained in the available fragments, archival documents and historical drawings. The aim was to construct a model as similar as possible to what the original model would have looked like. The minutes of meetings of the advisory committee reveal how a wooden model was used as a starting point for discussions around the design of the building. Members would regularly meet with the RE Henry D. Scott, who was in charge of the project, in front of the model and suggest alterations to the design. Following these meetings, the model would be modified through an iterative process. It is a very rare occurrence that such a working model exists and it is even rarer that such rich archival documentation survives, giving a sense of how it was used. The exterior is very plain, showing only a limited portion of the façade, as a 'stick on' two-dimensional coloured drawing. The model was built, in fact, to develop the design of the building's interior. Separate models (some of which are in the V&A collections) were made to work out the architectural features of the exterior. Judging from the material evidence, it is likely that the model was constructed in a way which would enable users to inspect the interior closely from different points of view. The roof could be lifted to look at the auditorium as a whole from above. Furthermore one quarter (or maybe a half) could be extracted to allow a closer view from the side. It is also likely that the model did not have the arena's floor. Such a solution, given the considerable size of the object, would have allowed a viewer to stand inside the model shoulder-high and look around, simulating, to a wider extent, the impression of the architecture on a visitor standing in the finished building. The model being donated is the outcome of a collaboration between Dr. Simona Valeriani (V&A Research Institute) and Mr. Scott Miller (B.15 Workshop, University of Manchester). It is based on the research carried out by Simona Valeriani on the building history of the Royal Albert Hall, funded by the Leverhulme Trust. It was made to coincide with the 'Shaping Space: architectural Models revealed' exhibition at the Building Centre (funded by this grant), where it was on show alongside the original fragment and a digital version of it. The artefact has grown out of a sustained conversation between Simona Valeriani and Scott Miller. The process of making the model has brought to light- questions around different possible architectural and technical solutions. Similar considerations, undoubtedly, were at the forefront of the designers' minds in the 1860s. This collaboration has been crucial to interpreting the original model and understanding its place in the design process, as well as leading to a detailed critical analysis of the drawings kept in the archive. The collaboration and the making of the model have been enabled by generous funding by Manchester University.

Impact The architectural model of the Royal Albert Hall was prominently displayed in the exhibition Shaping Space - Architectural Models Revealed at the Building Centre. Its production solidified the relationship between the V&A and the University of Manchester, leading to additional funding for the project from the university and the delivery of a series of special workshops for students from the university and prospective sixth-form students. It was a key object used by all primary, secondary and tertiary educational outreach for the exhibition. It has also created a professional model of how historic research and contemporary model-making skills can through an act of re-making produce innovative research into historic building practices and our built environment today.

Description The award allowed us to bring to the general public an awareness of the importance of physical model making in contemporary architectural practice.
Furthermore, it allowed us to pilot ways in which model making can be used as a methodology/ resource for learning through making with school aged children, engaging them in questions around space, materiality, technology but also as a way of expressing complex relationships with the built environment and the communities who inhabit them.
The insights gained from the collaboration with schools were really interesting and led to a collaboration with the Craft Council.

Insight son the historical and contemporary use of architectural models have also been gained.
Exploitation Route The teachers resources we have made available on our webpage (lessons plans and recorded CDP sessions) will enable teachers to use these methodologies in their practice.

Researchers will also benefit from the materials available on our website, which can act as a springboard for further work in the field.

PI Contribution The curatorial team decided that the exhibition would be mainly about physical models but that we would tackle the digital dimension with a few, thought-provoking exhibits. The architect Sam Jacob is well-known for his work (also exhibited at the Biennale and at the V&A) reflecting on the relationship between copy and original, image and object. The on show in Shaping Space continues Jacob's interest in the idea of architecture as a form of representation - in this case drawing on the self-declared significance of an otherwise unremarkable barn as the subject of photos. In this way these are models of the patchy, touristic, photographic records of the barn, and not the architectural form of the barn itself. When we approached him, Sam had worked on this project but he had not transformed the digital files back into a physical object, quite a costly endeavour. Through the partnership with Amalgam, brokered by the project, we enabled the creation of this installation which attracted interest by the public. We also organised a public event in which Sam presented his project.
Collaborator Contribution Amalgam, a professional, well-established model making firm, was asked to help create a three dimensional model of the Moulton Barn in Wyoming, US. Labelled as the 'most photographed barn in the world' the architect Sam Jacob wanted to explore what could be created physically using photogrammetry as the only source of information. They were given a few 3D CAD models from Sam that showed the range of success he had in using photogrammetry. The brief was to print three models showing this varying degrees of success. The CAD needed to be thickened from just being surfaces and some elements needed to be tweaked to make the models printable. The models were printed on one of their Formlabs SLA 3D printers in a grey resin. Once printed, each model was mounted on a clear acrylic rod and displayed in a row above a 20mm thick polished black acrylic base. It took the team approx. three days to prepare the CAD for printing, print the models themselves, make the base and clear acrylic stanchions and assemble the whole model. Amalgam reported "we were more than happy to do this as a donation from Amalgam to the exhibition (especially as the exhibition was promoting the importance of scale models!!!) and we were very appreciative of the time you gave us on your social media posts and mentions in the exhibition literature and graphics. This has been a fantastic project to be involved with and a great way to make ourselves known to a wider audience as well both yourselves and Sam Jacob Studio."
Impact Model was on display at the Building Centre and the subject of a public talk.

Description B.15 Modelmaking workshop at The University of Manchester
Organisation University of Manchester

Sector Academic/University
PI Contribution Simona Valeriani instigated this collaboration seeing the potential for research, and for communication in the exhibition, intrinsic in a joint exercise recreating the missing parts of the fragmentary Royal Albert Hall model from the 1860s. The process was used as a research tool to better understand the development of the Hall's design over time, and the place occupied by the historical model therein. The collaborative production of the the model was a very interesting experience and an example how research can be conducted by a team bringing together different skills and methodologies, from archival analysis to research through making. The participation of Manchester University staff and the funding they brought allowed to involve 6th form students intensively in the project's schools outreach program, going well beyond what the original project was set to deliver.
Collaborator Contribution The B.15 Modelmaking workshop at The University of Manchester produced a 1:125 scale section model of the Royal Albert Hall. This was based on the original fragment model and took reference from the original building plans in order to decipher and recreate the missing pieces. Secondly Scott Miller, Head of the Lab, took part in two outreach events aimed at 6th form students. One event was a presentation about his career and role as a modelmaker which was done along with fellow staff member and senior lecturer Matt Ault. This was followed by a practical session where students undertook sketch modelling activities. B.15 also contributed financially to the exhibition and associated events, providing sponsorship of £3000. Shaping Space has provided a great focus point for students that has helped reinforce their views about the value of modelmaking in architectural practice. The recorded material produced in the supporting events will continue to be used as points of reference when discussing the subject.
Impact There have been several visits to the exhibition by our students, some guided some independent. This has helped to inspire their ongoing modelmaking work. The model we produced was a unique undertaking that helped to better define our understanding of the original heavily damaged model. It will be donated to the Royal Albert Hall and added to their collection for future display.

PI Contribution Simona Valeriani (project's PI) co-curated the exhibition, co-devised and co-delivered the public program with colleagues from the Building Centre. Marta Ajmar (project's CI) was responsible for overseeing the pedagogical aspects of the project linking the devised activities and carried out as part of the public program to current, wider methodological debates and experimentations. Rebecca Goozee (Schools coordinator, employed by the V&A specifically for this project) developed the schools workshops in conversation with PI and CI. She delivered the sessions and reached out to teachers and institutions for the CPD events. These activities were carried out in conversation with the Building Centre, which is looking to expand their provision in this field and were eager to gain insights and engage new audiences. Georgia Haseldine, V&A project coordinator, took care of the overall organisation of the project and ensured financial accountability, as well as contributing significantly to the production of outputs such as blog posts and social media engagements.
Collaborator Contribution The Building Centre curatorial team comprised of Vanessa Norwood, Harriet Jennings and Mathilde Savary co-curated the exhibition and events programme alongside Simona Valeriani of the V&A . Building Centre staff have used their experience in the curation and organisation of a varied public programme of events to deliver a successful programme of free talks, tours, and workshops. All staff time has been given in-kind by the Building Centre. The in-kind cost of the gallery spaces given by the Building Centre equates to 24 weeks at £1,500 = £36,000. In addition, The Building Centre has contributed £13,233 towards the staging of the exhibition. The Shaping Space project has allowed the Building Centre to increase their engagement with a wider public audience. They have worked with schools to deliver educational projects that will positively impact both the Building Centre and the V&A. Through the exhibition the Building Centre has successfully positioned itself as a welcoming and inclusive place to learn and discover the importance of making.
Impact The education programme has established links with schools, sixth form colleges and universities that will be taken forward to establish educational work at the Building Centre and beyond. The schools workshops in particular enabled deeper and more long-lasting engagement than previously ever achieved, and these relationships and practices will be built upon in the coming years. We have closely collaborated with the V&A on events that have taken place both at the Building Centre and the V&A. Our website will host learning materials for teachers and students to be freely available. We have written and commissioned blog posts for both the Building Centre website and the Architectural Models page hosted by the V&A. Our online talks are available on our YouTube channel where they continue to gain viewers.

Results and Impact An online event on 28 January 2022 for students at Arts University Bournemouth entitled 'Curating Models: the why, how and who of modelmaking'. This was a sort of remote guided tour for Under Graduate and Post Graduate students some of whom were set to visit the exhibition in the following weeks. As a preparation students were asked by their tutors to watch recordings of some of our on line evening events. The students seemed very interested and actively engaged with the topic. The talk allowed students to have some background information when visiting the exhibition and gave food for thought also to those unable to make the journey to London. As a consequence of the event, students reported a greater awareness of the different kinds of model making techniques and materials as well as of the different uses models can be made to perform. Such information and experience feed directly into the students'' activities on the course. In particular this cohort of students benefitted from such experience, as they have largely missed the model making and hands-on experience during the pandemic. Teachers reported how important the show was in helping to bridge that gap.

Results and Impact Exploring Scale: On 23 November 2021, learners form St Luke's primary school were invited to the Building Centre for their first session to interact with the exhibition and to discuss and explore scale in model making. Learners were invited to look closely at the architectural models on show and consider their size and how they represented building. To further deepen understanding of this new concept we took the students to Russell Square, drawing on the model of Bloomsbury overtime on show in the exhibition, and asked teh pupils to consider how to represent the buildings they saw with their bodies. On returning to the building centre, learners then translated their understanding into models of Russell square using scale accurately and exploring different modelling materials.

Student Feedback:
'My favourite model was the one that showed Bloomsbury like because of how they made it change and more.'

'I liked the fashion gallery because I loved the details'

"My favourite is the looks like we've made it because it is two houses that you can flip over and it has a teeny weeny chicken'

Results and Impact Making our world: On 29 November, learners at St Luke's were invited to design a city for 50 residents. The leaners had to consider the needs of their residents and access to services, homes, play and transport. The learners had to create models for their buildings using a scale of 1:50. During this session we talked about the role of architects in shaping public and private spaces and how to create models using only reclaimed materials.

Results and Impact Playing with electricity: On 6 December, learners at St Luke's were invited to bring their town together with light and were taught the basics of electronic circuits, using electric paint, LEDs and 3v batteries. Learners were instructed to decide what areas of their city needed lights and to construct the circuits. This workshop helped the learners to bring together science based learning into a creative activity and consider how town planning occurs in architectural model making.

Results and Impact On 11 January, learners from Hatchend High School visited the Building Centre of their first session. They were invited to explore the exhibition theme of why we make architectural models. Learners were encouraged to explore the exhibition to gain an understanding of the different purposes of architectural model making, with a specific focus on testing. Learners then recreated the famous Forth Bridge model, exploring the role of tension in structural design. Subsequently Leaners, inspired by the models in the exhibition, used this knowledge to build a tower to withstand as much pressure as possible.
Feedback:
'The New York City set was really realistic due to the detail of the trash and comics.'; 'The modes are used from many different purposes, not only for modelling'; "I'm surprised that you can make stuff out of jelly and it still stands' ; Ritika in Year 8 said: 'I loved the trip, it was amazing. It was absolutely worth it. I personally enjoyed the scaled down examples of the different pieces of architecture. I very much enjoyed it. I would definitely love to go again.'; Matilda from Year 8 said: 'The trip was amazing, and I learnt a lot when I was there. I learnt how much detail they add into sculptures and what sort of material they use to sustain the piece of work. I also learnt the different shapes and sizes they use to create.; Robbie from Year 8 said: 'It was a fun trip. We had to build a replica of the design of the Forth Bridge in Scotland using five wooden planks and connected by rope using two chairs. Because the structure had to hold bricks, we used two people to hold the bridge with tension. We then built a tower out of paper straws, which had to hold up bricks. Our tower was able to hold 3 1/2 bricks on top of it before it crushed!

Results and Impact On 18 January, for the final session, and to explore who architectural models are made for, learners were asked to recreate a model of Euston Arch using historical sources, images, some dimension and air drying clay. This was to challenge the leaners to explore how and why models of historical buildings are constructed. Learners had to piece together a model of Euston arch using scantily available details, considering how the lack of information would impact their build.
