Are you game for Climate Action? - Engaging young people in built environment climate research through co-design and play
Lead Research Organisation:
Birmingham City University
Department Name: CEBE Sch of Eng & the Built Env
Abstract
The Climate Action Game project will use a co-design method to develop a boardgame focusing on climate research/action in the built environment. Climate change adaptation and mitigation in the built environment, while being researched, are not yet at the forefront of policy, public awareness or action (Harrop, 2018); e.g., public awareness about the amount of carbon that buildings use and produce appears low.
The PI's doctoral research project, entitled 'Youth's perceptions towards the planning of the future 'smart city' in Europe' explores the perceptions of 15-19-year-olds towards future urban development and aims to develop new methodologies of engaging young people in urban planning and to critically appraise future city visions against the needs of that demographic. The PI has experience in working with teenagers in research and design contexts.
The Co-I's doctoral project 'A critical realist perspective on environmental governance in city region planning' uses Birmingham City Region as a case study to explore linking ecosystems science and urban planning, identifying barriers and opportunities for a shift towards effective climate change action and nature-based solutions. The Co-I's subject, knowledge and locational focus are directly relevant to this bid. She collaborated in past UKRC-funded projects that developed a game (Rufopoly; https://www.bcu.ac.uk/research/stories/rural-urban-fringe) a participatory game-making resource (www.participology.com) and a planning game (https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/place-makers-educational-tool-for-teachers-11882632); in the latter instance working with GCSE and A-level students to test and refine the game.
The aim will be to co-design an action research game focusing on climate education in the built environment which can be used as a teaching tool and as a community game by young people to understand how their local built environment can adapt and help achieve the climate targets set by the Paris Climate Agreement/COPs. The main activities will be online climate literacy workshops, physical game design workshops and the peer/local research conducted by the young people. The final outputs will be presented in two Community game events at the GAP Art Centre. A further game launch event will be held at Birmingham City University in the week of COP26.
The target audience is threefold. First, the project aims to engage young people in climate research in the built environment by creating an engaging stand-alone product which will be enjoyable to play. Second, the game will be accompanied online by instructions how it can be used as a teaching tool in school settings. Third, other researchers and community organisations will be provided with the template (process) for developing specific local versions of the game.
The GAP Art Centre will provide access to artists, young people in Balsall Health and in-kind support (reduced venue hire costs). The Birmingham Architectural Association and the West Midlands Royal Town Planning Institute will provide support in-kind by providing access to practitioners, to volunteer and inform the young people about their work in sustainability and development and disseminate the final outputs. The Anthropocene Architecture School as an independent climate literacy education consultant will provide support with the development of the game and educational focus. The intended outputs will be a website, community game events and a boardgame. The innovative aspect of public engagement will be the focus on built environment climate literacy through play.
The project's impact addresses a gap in the provision of educational and youth engagement materials. Locally, the project has the potential to develop a group of young people as climate advocates. Nationally, the project can provide a clear output and a method for stimulating community interest, knowledge and action on climate change in the built environment.

Impact | During the game development our young co-researchers interviewed more than 30 people from all ages in the community, asking them about their climate worries. In the testing of the game over two Community Events we engaged more than 50 people, majority of which were under the age of 18. Outside of the two community events we demonstrated the game at informal and formal university events, museum events, engaged with families and worked with local climate action networks to test the game - overall, more than 40 people engaged in testing of the game outside of the funded events from the project. The game development was presented as the TET Dialogues event which engaged more than 50 people nationally working in the field of youth inclusion in built environment. Since the completion of the prototype, we presented the Game at the Festival of Tomorrow ran in collaboration with UKRI where more the 50 people from all ages (4+) engaged with the game and learned about retrofit. We played the game with Civic Square, a Birmingham based arts-organisation engaging diverse group of people from across The game is now awaiting final changes and print-out before the official website - www.climaniathegame.com is launched in late March where the print and play verson of the game will reside. We have received interest from more than 20 academics, professionals, politicians and other practitioners internationally that would like to download and play the game, even before we have ran a promotional campaign. |

Description | What were the most significant achievements from the award? The most significant achievement of the award were the creation of a playable board game. "Climania: The Climate Action Game" is an engagement, educational and discussion tool aimed at informing the public of the role of the built environment in the climate emergency - specifically focusing on urban planning and retrofit. The findings of the research point to successful co-design research methods with young people, engagement techniques and serious play design as a means to disseminate complex climate research. In our engagement we worked with 13 young people as co-leads on the project! During the game development they acted as researchers and interviewed more than 30 people from all ages in the community, asking them about their climate worries. We engaged 4 external professionals in our development of the game. In the testing of the game over two Community Events we engaged more than 50 people (majority under the age of 18). To what extent were the award objectives met? If you can, briefly explain why any key objectives were not met. We delivered the events and research participation that we aimed for: a co-designed process generating a physical board game; a website hosting the downloadable files; public engagement events in the GAP Art Project and Birmingham City University (to take place on the 23rd of March). We delivered dissemination through public media such as podcasts, conference discussion and publications on BCU website. As part of the launch we are preparing a press release and will work with partners to amplify the dissemination. We are not yet to deliver a journal article, this is because of the project still ongoing. How might the findings be taken forward and by whom? The findings in the research project will be taken forward by the PI and Co-I to generate academic articles after the end of the project ton the 31st of March. The Game will be explored as a further IP product by BCU. There has been interest by the commercialisation team to take the game forward and develop it as a product which could be purchased. However, as the PI ceased to be an employee on 31st of January 2022, but continued as PhD Student, the work completed on this research project in February and March 2022 is outside of the remits of any contractual obligation with Birmingham City University, which means that there are some intellectual properties relationships to be ironed out first. |
Exploitation Route | We foresee a wide appeal of the game. The game is now awaiting final changes and print-out before the official website - www.climaniathegame.com is launched in late March where the print and play version of the game will reside. We have received interest from more than 10 academics, professionals, and other practitioners internationally that would like to download and play the game, even before we have ran a promotional campaign. The game files are free to play and govern by a Creative Licence, which will allow people to print and play the game at home reaching wide audiences. We will monitor this engagement on the website when launched. |

Description | We have seen the game being used in community settings across Birmingham. In Ladywood ward, the organisation Civic Square has used Climania as a spotlight of good practice and a retrofit catalyst amongst community members. They havealso started to develop their own game. In the ward of Balsal Heath, the game has contributed to the creation of Retrofit Balsall Heath - a community-led retrofit group aiming to channel investment in local renovaitons. We have also seen the game being used as education and continuous professional development tool in non-academic settings (open days, field trip, community engagements) at private practices, Birmingham City University, Architects Climate Network, London School of Architecture, University of Birmingham. Results and Impact | Architecture is Climate is a programme of residencies in the Lethaby Gallery by architecture research collective MOULD in collaboration with Soft Agency, Climate and Cities, Anthropocene Architecture School and Civic Square. It begins by tracing architecture's relationship with the causes of climate breakdown. In particular, it argues that architecture needs to address its reliance on extractivist practices that propel climate breakdown. An evolving programme of interventions and workshops, propose ways in which architecture might become part of the wider systemic change that puts climate first. Architecture is Climate invites you to be part of reimagining spatial practices by focusing on positive change, that can happen from within cracks in the present system. A reorientation of architecture can have radical potential in reformulating social and spatial configurations to better serve climate justice. To say that architecture is climate means that other possible architectures are also other possible climates. |

The doughnut consists of two concentric rings: a social foundation, to ensure that no one is left falling short on life's essentials, and an ecological ceiling, to ensure that humanity does not collectively overshoot the [planetary boundaries](https://www.stockholmresilience.org/research/planetary-boundaries/planetary-boundaries/about-the-research/the-nine-planetary-boundaries.html) that protect Earth's life-supporting systems. Between these two sets of boundaries lies a doughnut-shaped space that is both ****ecologically safe and socially just: a space in which we can all thrive. |
