UK-China Song of the Female Textile Workers, past, present and the future

Lead Research Organisation: University of Leeds
Department Name: Sch of Performance & Cultural Industries

Abstract

UK-China Song of Female Textile Workers, past, present and the future is a one year practice-led research project aims to collect wider data on UK-China audiences and consumers culture in respond to AHRC's call on Understanding the Future of UK China R+I in the creative industries.

Textile heritage culture, both tangible (building site, machineries, fabric etc.) and intangible (music, songs, storytelling etc.) has been a core theme in post-industrial social and economic transformation. Both Eastern Delta China (Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu) and the North of England have countless textile mill turned arts and creative clusters for urban regeneration, gentrification, attracting tourists and consumers from diverse background. This cultural commonality was identified as the potential link in bridging UK-China audiences and consumers' taste on our AHRC awarded project Song of the Female Textile Workers, UK-China digital connectivity (2020-2021), which took Shanghai all-female yueju as a case study and developed into a mixed reality performance produced entirely online. Shanghai yueju originated from Zhejiang rural folk song and grew to become China's most popular opera, to date over 360 different forms are practiced, with patrons mainly being Shanghai/Zhejiang migrant female workers. The initial findings gained positive response from audiences across the UK and China. Meanwhile, what has also been identified is the limited research on UK textile intangible cultural heritage (ICH), and how it can better brand UK cultural identity, especially the North of England, to attract audiences and consumers nationally and globally for further socio-economic transformation and growth.

This one year project seeks to gain deeper understanding of possible compatible audience and consumer taste on music, theatre, digital performance and related creative products and the best practice in jointly creating cultural products to cater for a shared UK-China audience and consumer. China has taken ICH as a priority in its cultural and creative industries (CCIs as China's preferred terminology) content development and its international soft power insertion. Government policy closely monitors and ensures ICH is incorporated into all CCIs sectors. Tencent's launch of a series of mobile games since 2019 on the theme of yueju and other opera forms targeting national and international affluent consumers is only one example. This project takes China strategic ICH CCIs direction to engage with and research on audience and consumer culture is therefore timely and the knowledge generated will inform the future UK-China R+I creative industries development.

PI Contribution The PI is based at the School of Performance and Cultural Industries, University of Leeds and will utilise expertise in fields of CCI and Performance research to develop project ambitions. CCI has been developing rapidly since the early 2000s and Chinese CCI, as a new subject, emerged from the late 2000s. Much of the leading CCI literature in English is translated into Chinese. Within the existing Chinese CCI publications, both translated and original, there has been focus on cultural policy and the creative city, with some emphasis on creative clusters, but extremely few studies have addressed relationships between SMEs, community building and eco-urban regeneration, through establishing a creative chain between SMEs and public art institutions. Our research will make a new contribution to CCI studies in this context and assist academic understanding of working with a broad range of public institutions and SMEs, which is crucial to advancing CCI research, in particular in the field of mixed reality performance, in both China and the UK.
Collaborator Contribution Partners will collaborate throughout the project to develop three products. Product 1 is an interactive virtual reality exhibition hosted by the Chuansha Digital Opera Museum. Product 2 is a virtual reality performance of 'Salome' Product 3 is a new dramatic/operatic fusion performance featuring elements of Products 1 & 2. Initial partnership of 'Invisible Flock' and Shanghai Pudong New District Government were to develop Product 1. Invisible Flock have since withdrawn from participation due to financial constraints resulting from Covid-19. New partners 'Dubit' are assessing their ambition of entering the Chinese Gaming Market and developing product 1 inline with their specialities of childrens educational gaming. Product 2 is lead by Human Studio Ltd and Shanghai Yue Opera House to create a new performance of Salome with digital enhancement. Leeds Playnouse and Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre are to collaborate on a new fusion production which will feature in the 2023 Shanghai International Festival. Shanghai Theatre Academy are providing technical support for all productions and conference facilities. ECUPL are providing technical support for video recording and also research assistance in audience development. Shanghai Arts Research Institute are providing research facilities and output publications through their monthly journal - Shanghai Arts Review. Shanghai Textile Museum and Leeds Industrial Museum are collaborating on 'Song of the Female Textile Workers through the facilitation of project exhibitions on websites and joint research to identify commonalities between UK-China textile labour.
Impact Covid-19 restricted all activity immediately upon funding commencement. AHRC top-Up funding in relation to Covid-19 - new project Song of the Female Textile Workers has held online exhibition on Leeds Industrial Museum website Shanghai Textile Museum and Leeds Industrial Museum have agreed a memorandum of understanding to work alongside the project and develop an ongoing international research collaboration for future exhibitions.

Description Popular performance for new urban audiences: reconnecting M50 creative cluster with Shanghai All-Female Yue Opera
Organisation Bandu Cabin
Country China
Sector Private
PI Contribution Shanghai is one of the largest cities in China with a rich cultural heritage which attracts national and international tourists on a large scale. Yue Opera, as a relatively new phenomenon, given China's extensive history, is under-represented within the scope of contemporary urban audience, despite being one of the most representative cultural forms of Shanghai modernity. Whilst Yue Opera has its origin in the Zhejiang region it evolved to the current all-female form in Shanghai under patronage of the migrant female cotton-mill workers in the 1930s - the first working class female group created in China. Shanghai Yue Opera House was established in 1955 and remains the largest Yue Opera House in China to this day. Throughout the more recent period of China's economic expansion, art forms such as Yue Opera have been side-lined as focus has been placed on introduction of Western cultural goods and popular entertainment. Yue Opera is now performed to limited audience, mainly during tours to provincial areas, and the urban audience is decreasing. Although Shanghai Yue Opera is widely seen as a historical art form Shanghai Yue Opera House hosts talented artists and performers capable of producing contemporary productions of excellent quality. The main problem faced by the Opera House is the marketization of such work under existing financial and conceptual constraints. Yue Opera, as an all-female art form, is representative of China's first working class female group. It remains a representative art of Shanghai (and Chinese) women. The chance to reconnect with contemporary urban women which this project proposes is a timely opportunity for the Opera House to rebrand and present new and innovative work which is very welcomed.
Collaborator Contribution Shanghai Yue Opera Theatre: Shanghai Yue Opera House will allow the selection of copywritten media materials from our extensive archives to showcase the history of the art form Shanghai Yue Opera House artists and technicians will assist in the process of the project, including representatives attending all the workshops and 1 UK field trip over the three year period They will create links to our website and social media networks to advertise the project and disseminate information throughout project development Xaioya Opera Company participate in all the workshops throughout the three year period, will work collaboratively with Strand 2 team to create and perform one section of the digital media production (no more than 15minutes each performance), at the Leeds symposium, Shanghai symposium, and the final opening Shanghai Bandu: Available performing space at Bandu Music Bar located at M50 Tiangong Creative Ltd: design and launch a new "Shanghai Yue Women" themed merchandise targeting new urban consumers through the primary location of M50, which has the highest volume of new urban art consumers, who are familiar with digital media and are willing to consume new cultural products Shanghai Theatre Academy provide full support for Prof. Huang's role as CH PI on this project, along with the staff, space and equipment required to support installation and practice of material products and performance.
