| Description | Through an iterative process we developed a toolkit for participatory saltmarsh monitoring to be used by members of the local community and a non-specialist audience. The toolkit is to be held by the Engineering Services at Lancaster City council and will be able to be customised for different purposes (for examples adding additional sensors). |
| Exploitation Route | The toolkit is currently being adapted to be used in a different project (Coastal Nature Lab, funded by EPSRC Network+ iPACT). |
| Sectors | Environment Government Democracy and Justice |
| Description | The toolkit developed for this project has been used in outreach activities with Morecambe Bay Partnership, particularly for engaging the public with observations and monitoring of strandlines on the beach. |
| First Year Of Impact | 2023 |
| Sector | Education,Environment |
| Impact Types | Societal |
| Description | Public engagement workshop with cyantotypes and strandline monitoring |
| Form Of Engagement Activity | Participation in an activity, workshop or similar |
| Part Of Official Scheme? | No |
| Geographic Reach | Local |
| Primary Audience | Public/other audiences |
| Results and Impact | The Sampas toolkit was used in an outreach activity co-organised with Morecambe Bay Partnership. The toolkit was used to document the strandline and cyanotypes were made of the individual species found in the strandline. The information was then included on a digital map |
| Year(s) Of Engagement Activity | 2023 |
| Description | Workshop to connect stakeholders involved in Saltmarsh Data Collection |
| Form Of Engagement Activity | A formal working group, expert panel or dialogue |
| Part Of Official Scheme? | No |
| Geographic Reach | Regional |
| Primary Audience | Third sector organisations |
| Results and Impact | The workshop brought together members of different organisations involved in coastal monitoring (with a specific focus on saltmarsh regeneration) in the North West of England - primarily Morecambe Bay. The workshop started with a mapping exercise in which participants identified data that is collected or needed to understand different phases of saltmarsh accretion and depletion as well as who owns that data. This highlighted discrepancies and gaps in data collection and sharing for the purpose of data informed decisionmaking. The map was digitalised and shared with participants. In the second session we discussed data collection methods and speculated on new tools and practices, and gathered feedback about the strategies adopted in the Sampas project. |
| Year(s) Of Engagement Activity | 2023 |
| Description | Workshop with Grange Geography Society |
| Form Of Engagement Activity | Participation in an activity, workshop or similar |
| Part Of Official Scheme? | No |
| Geographic Reach | Local |
| Primary Audience | Public/other audiences |
| Results and Impact | The initial prototypes of the Sampas project were tested with 14 members of the Geography society of Grange over Sands over a morning walk along the beach. Feedback from the activity informed the development of further prototypes. |
