Description The main aim of this project was to develop the interferometric biosensor for measuring various dynamic molecular processes in real time, with in-depth structural resolution to distinguish different interfacial structures and interactions. The project was very successful in that we showed in several real biomolecular binding systems that it could quantitatively measure biomolecular binding and recognition. The most popular system that was used to demonstrate the capability and potential was the binding of pregnant hormone hCG to monoclonal antibodies to mimic the working of the real pregnancy test pens.
Exploitation Route We have published several papers describing technical development as well as our own studies on the improvement of accuracy of the pregnancy tests and how our studies benefited the molecular level of understanding about non-specific binding and how to control it during product manufacturing. This work was undertaken in collaboration with Unipath (now SPD at Bedford).

Description The main impact was to the biosensor developing and manufacturing company who entered into this project as a key collaborating partner. The study helped to revise the sensor chamber and fluidic system, to facilitate the real-time dynamic measurements for different biointerfacial binding, recognition and interactions. Then, the studies of model binding systems such as hCG-antibody recognition, can benefit biochemists and biotechnologists. We have reached these readers via open publications and presentations at national and international meetings. The antibody binding work is also educational to school kids and general public as such simple tests can easily inform them about the stage of pregnancy from the hCG level in our bodily fluids, and the difference between pregnant females in this regard is small, thus making it practically possible to detect the stage of pregnancy very accurately.
