Translation of a novel electrical stimulation perfusion bioreactor

Lead Research Organisation: University of Manchester
Department Name: Materials

Abstract

This project focuses on translating an existing bioreactor design that can be used to grow a variety of tissues in the laboratory. In particular, we will be optimising the growth of cardiac muscle and neural tissue in a 3D perfusion bioreactor whilst incorporating electrical stimulation regimes. The bioreactor configuration is entirely novel and we will strengthen and finalise our existing IP and file a patent as a result of this grant. This project will engage with a variety of industrial collaborators in market steering capacity and tissue phenotype maintenance proof of concept data will be gained.

Description Development of perfusion bioreactor with electrical stimulus - tested in collaboration with Loughborough University for skeletal muscle
Development of electrical stimulator bioreactor for bone tissue engineering.
Furthered understanding regarding mechanism of cell response including role of faraday byproducts and heterogeneity of electrical field in different bioreactor systems.
Furthered understanding of cathode local cell responses in terms of cell alignment and maturation.
Exploitation Route A super follow on fund from BBSRC is currently being applied for (An EOI has already been successful in March 2016). This grant will include input from pharma companies and other stakeholders for development of 3D tissue culture for bone, tendon and skeletal muscle for toxicology applications and ultimately tissue engineering strategies.
Sectors Electronics,Healthcare

Description National and international collaborations have been established with academics, industry and clinicians as a result of this grant funding. An EOI for BBSRC super follow on funding has been submitted and was successful in March 2016. Full sFOF planned for submission in October 2017.
