Description There is an obvious complementarity between Rothamsted Research (RRes) in the UK and INIA in Uruguay. Both are national, multi-site agricultural research institutes and both have a focus on the Sustainable Intensification of Agriculture with shared remits to deliver knowledge, innovation and new practices to increase crop productivity and quality whilst developing environmentally sustainable solutions for agricultural systems.

Nine staff from Rothamsted research attended a three-day workshop funded by the BBSRC and INIA that was held at two of INIA's research centres in Uruguay. Many more staff from INIA attended at each centre where presentations were given from scientists in both organisations describing capacities and progress across three main areas research areas. A full agenda and list of delegates is supplied in the attached documents.

Day 1, at INIA Treinta y Tres presentations focused on Grassland systems with field visits to the Palo a Pique Research Unit looking at Crop-pasture rotation experiments, Natural Grasslands and Livestock production systems.
Day 2, at INIA La Estanzuela presentations focused on Sustainable Intensification of arable systems with a field visit to the Wheat nutrient management experiment.
Day 3, at INIA La Estanzuela presentations focused on Long-Term Experiments with a field visit to the Long term crop rotation trials and the Dairy Production Unit.
The workshops and field visits were very rewarding and multiple opportunities were identified where both parties may benefit from further collaboration
Exploitation Route Outcomes:
Grassland systems
There is a significant opportunity to capitalise on aligning the INIA farm platform/ extensive crop-pasture- livestock system experiments with the work underway at the North Wyke Farm Platform (NW-FP), particularly in light of the long-term records held at both sites and the opportunity to test hypothesis in different geographies and to generate dual-season data sets per year.
Actions
1) Submit a BBSRC Partnering award to enable further engagement between multiple staff working on the NW-FP particularly on livestock productions systems, GHG emissions, N, P & C modelling and data management :Paul Harris, Robert Orr, Lianhai Wu, Laura Cardenas , Jenni Dungait , Adie Collins, Andrew Mead: Walter Ayala, José Velazco, Fernando Lattanzi, Virginia Pravia
2) encourage sabbaticals from INIA staff to NW: RRes leadership: INIA leadership
3) encourage sandwich student placements between RRes and INIA: RRes leadership: INIA leadership

Sustainable Intensification of Arable Systems
Several opportunities for mutual collaboration were identified; particular interest was shown in soil health/ microbiome studies as well as weed science and pest management in arable systems. Again the attractiveness of well managed long-term crop rotation experiments in a contrasting geography could significantly expand the impact of the science undertaken in both organisations
Actions
1) Staff exchange under weed science programmes: Jon Storkey, Paul Neve: Alejandro Garcia
2) Staff exchange under crop protection programme: Gia Aradottir: Fernando Lattanzi, Ximena Cibils, Nora Altier
3) ISIS application under soil health programme: Jackie Stroud: Valentina Rubio
4) Link soil microbiome teams at INIA and RRes Vanessa MacMillan, Penny Hirsch, Tim Mauchline, Andy Neal, Andrew Mead, Keywan Hassani-Pak: Elena Beyhaut, Nora Altier
5) Encourage sandwich student placements between RRes and INIA, Jorge Sawchik
6) Continue interactions under SDSN. Lianhai Wu: Bruno Lanfranco

Long-Term Experiments (LTEs)
There is an obvious opportunity to collaborate in the area of LTEs. INIA and RRes share a long tradition in managing LTEs examining agronomic practice, with RRes holding the longest running LTEs in the world and INIA hosting the oldest plots in Latin America, with over 50 years of continuous experimentation. Aside from learning from each other in terms of best-practice there was also considerable overlap in the need for appropriate data-management and statistical analysis programmes to be in place to maximise the usage and impact of the data generated by these experiments. INIA are currently reviewing their LTE plans and it makes immense sense for RRes to be involved in these discussions as future experimentation is planned.
Actions
1) Hold a workshop on the future of INIA's LTE's taking into account RRes experience and capacity on data management - RRes LTE committee to take part remotely, INIA to supply background documentation and data ahead of the workshop: Jon Storkey , Vanessa MacMillan, Andy MacDonald, Andrew Mead: Jorge Sawchik, Walter Ayala, José Velazco

2) Submit a Brazil partnering award to develop regional capacity in applied statistics between Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay: Andrew Mead: Jorge Sawchik
