Description This is the press release about the MoU between the two organisations

On 24th August 2018 the Riddet Institute at Massey University signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Leeds, UK, for a period of five years. This document formalises and standardises the existing relationship between the two institutions and opens the gate for the preparation and administration of programmes for collaboration and co-operation. By signing the memorandum, both organisations formally recognise the common interests of both institutions in the fields of food science and the mutual benefits which will arise from extended collaboration. Through the proposed agreement, the international connections for both education and research will be strengthened between both universities. A pathway will be created for increasing joint publications, third party funding applications, recruitment of post-graduate students, even potential recruitment of undergraduate students and collaborative visits by researchers as well as developing joint research programmes.
The University of Leeds and the Riddet Institute have been collaborating for a long time on research with funding from BBSRC international partnership grant. A follow-up workshop was held at the University of Leeds on 13 April where a discussion was held on "elderly and infant digestion models". The Riddet Institute will host a number of visiting academics from the University of Leeds in November. As part of the student exchange programme, a Riddet Institute PhD student will spend 4.5 months at the University of Leeds from October 2018 to 1 March 2019. The Riddet Institute hosted visitors from the School of Food Science and Nutrition, University of Leeds in 2013. In November 2017, Dr Anwesha Sarkar, UoL, visited the Riddet Institute along with a PhD student. Anwesha Sarkar has published a number of joint papers with Riddet Institute/Massey University.
Distinguished Professor Harjinder Singh, Director of the Riddet Institute, has high praise for the University of Leeds: "The University is one of the largest higher education institutions in the UK. They are renowned globally for the quality of their teaching and research across the whole spectrum of food, from the molecular level to how food affects our body and how diet influences our health. Their research tackles major and emerging problems in food science and nutrition. They are recognised as world-leaders in food colloids and diet and health. They apply fundamental scientific principles to address issues of food quality, safety and sustainability, diet quality and consumer behaviour, from food production to the consumer's plate." The University of Leeds hosted the 17th Food Colloids Conference in April 2018 and Distinguished Professor Harjinder Singh gave a keynote presentation. Professor Matt Golding (Principal Investigator), Dr Anant Dave (Postdoc) and Dr Lara Merino-Matis (MIFST) gave an oral presentation and Dr Teresa Wegrzyn (Postdoc) and Debashree Roy (PhD student) presented posters.
The Four University Consortium comprising The University of Leeds, Riddet Institute/Massey University, Wageningen University and Zhejiang Gongshang University of China signed a Memorandum of Understanding at a forum held in China in 2016. This is a very significant relationship, bringing together some of the top universities in food and nutrition research in the world to collaborate on joint opportunities in food science research in China.

Results and Impact Visit 5: UK to NZ by Anwesha Sarka and Amelia Torcello-Gomez from 2/11/2017 to 16/11/2017 undertaking activities in Task 1 and 4
We had a very productive BBSRC partnership meeting - 3 days at Massey University Palmerton North. Broadly, I think student exchange (PhD/ MSc from NZ for 6 months) is a good way to initiate collaborations - Massey has some scholarships for PhD Students to go abroad for 6 months, so we have discussed these aspects with both Prof Singh and Prof Golding.
We also had a meeting with Fonterra Chair of Food structure, they have interests in soft matter physics - I think a potential SOFI CDT project can be proposed to Fonterra.
Overall, we had one to one meeting with the following people:
1. Dr. Christina Coker - at Fonterra, NZ, Manager for all external/ academic collaborations She was very interested in the potential for a CDT studentship
2. Prof. Harjinder Singh
3. Prof. Matt Golding
4. Dr. Aiqian Ye
5. Dr. Jaspreet Singh
6. Prof. Joanne Hort - Newly joined in Massey from Nottingham, Consumer Science
7. Prof. John Brunlond - Chewing and engineering aspects of Oral Processing, Massey
8. Prof. Roger Lentle
9. Dr. Lara Matia-Merino
A mini workshop was held involving PhD, Masters Students, Postdocs, Research Assistant and academics, academics at Massey on 14th Nov. The discussion of in vitro digestion, mainly focussed on Infogest static, dynamic model as well as elderly human trials.
We also had a very good lab visit with view of the human gastric simulator (2 for adults and one for infant).

Workshop 1: UK in Leeds associated with Food Colloids meeting (8-11/4/2018) and Infogest workshop (12/4/2018) at the University of Leeds. This project supported the visit of Prof Harjinder Singh and Prof Matt Golding as part of a larger delegation from RI. In particular, the RI group were able to contribute significantly to discussions in the Infogest meeting. At the end of the workshop, a number of actions were suggested as follows:
• A reciprocal visit and workshop for November 2018 (completed)
• Draft a split site PhD arrangement (in hand)
• Assess the possibility of a study abroad agreement with Massey University (in hand)
• Drafting of an MoU between RI and University of Leeds (Completed)
Workshop 2: Food Structure Design for New Food Applications Workshop, Wednesday, 14 November 2018, Sport & Rugby Institute, Massey University, Palmerston North. The workshop included talks by staff from The Riddet Institute and University of Leeds and covered a number of topics including an update on Infogest network activities.
The rest of the visit (10/11/2018 to 18/11/2018) included other meetings with Massey academics, a half day meeting with staff at Fonterra and a meeting with staff at Plant and Food Research led by John Monro. We also had a useful meeting with Ben Boyd from Monash University in Melbourne.
