Pilot Algal Lipid Manufacturing in the United Kingdom (PALM-UK)

Lead Research Organisation: Rothamsted Research
Department Name: Plant Sciences

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Planned Impact

As described in proposal submitted to IUK

Description We have developed multifunctionilized algal strains able to produce high value lipids and proteins. We have engineered the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum to accumulate high levels of omega-3 EPA and DHA together with recombinant proteins, the fungal or bacterial phytases.
Exploitation Route We demonstrated the feasibility of developing nultifunctionalized microalgae for the production of industrial useful proteins and fatty acids to meet the demand of modern intensive fish farming industry. Further animal studies will evaluate the suitability of generated strains for use within commercial feed applications

Organisation University of Grenoble
Country France
Sector Academic/University
PI Contribution Functional characterization of palmitic acid elongase in yeast
Collaborator Contribution Eight fatty acid elongases and six desaturases involved in VLC-PUFA production in Nannochloropsis gaditana have been identified. The highly expressed isoform ?0-ELO1 has been characterized via targeted gene knock-out (KO). The 0-elo1 mutants had a reduced EPA level and displayed a functionally impaired photosynthesis.
Impact This study gives insights on the regulation of lipid synthesis in heterokonts and also provides interesting prospects for the engineering of these algae for biotechnological applications.
