lcmsWorld - multi-dimensional visualisation and annotation platform for mass spectrometry

Lead Research Organisation: University of Liverpool
Department Name: Institute of Integrative Biology

Abstract

One of the main platforms in Life Sciences research is liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS). LC-MS can measure many 1000s of biomolecules concurrently, particular proteins and chemicals (metabolites). These approaches are used to understand the basic function of cells, tissues and organs, as well as changes occurring in disease processes. LC-MS produces very large and complex data files, and current visualisation software is lacking. Across multiple experiments, it is also a challenge to manage large data sets and ask intelligent questions. In this application, we are going to develop commercial grade and user friendly software for visualisation and database storage of LC-MS data, to assist laboratories working in this area, called lcmsWorld.

Description We have developed innovative software for visualising mass spectrometry data in 3D, to assist data analysis for proteomics and metabolomics. The grant funded 18 months development time, and we are now at the stage of having an impressive "beta" version of the software (http://pgb.liv.ac.uk/lcmsWorld/) - available for download with a time-limited licence. We are not releasing the source code yet, since we are now moving into the phase of searching for licence partners. To achieve a licencing deal, we may need to raise the profile of the software by putting out a feature limited release, or embedding the software within an existing platform free-of-charge in the first instance. We are currently exploring these options with the Technology Transfer Team, and searching for additional funding.

In 2021, a manuscript describing the software has just been accepted (DOI to come in 2022), and the software is now out
.
Exploitation Route We intend to licence the software in due course.
Sectors Healthcare,Manufacturing, including Industrial Biotechology,Pharmaceuticals and Medical Biotechnology

Description We have presented the software to commercial partners, and are further exploring licencing deals, since we do not believe there is a competitor software able to function as well as lcmsWorld, thus it has some unique features.
