Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description The FTMA has enabled many early career researchers (ECRs) to be involved in exchanges with academia and industry globally (including partners such as Medtronic, AstraZeneca and UCB Cell tech. Although the FTMA is still ongoing, we expect that the exchanges will facilitate knowledge exchange, skill development and confidence building and lead to outcomes including publications, data analysis pipeline tools, drug discovery, clinical trials and REF impact cases.
Exploitation Route The findings will be utilised in collaborative projects with the partner institutions.
Sectors Digital/Communication/Information Technologies (including Software),Education,Environment,Healthcare,Manufacturing, including Industrial Biotechology,Pharmaceuticals and Medical Biotechnology

PI Contribution Developing cell lines to test receptor activation and inhibition using the SPASM sensor technology
Collaborator Contribution Assay development and compounds
Impact Being in Glasgow also gave me the opportunity to meet with other academics who work with PAR2 in translational research looking at its role in COPD and rheumatoid arthritis. I presented my work to them and will remain in contact with the hope that we can collaborate in the future.
Start Year 2018

Description AstraZeneca - Mitxitorena/Carmody

Start Year 2017

Description AstraZeneca - Whitley/Baillie
Organisation AstraZeneca
Department Astra Zeneca
Country United States
Sector Private
PI Contribution Knowledge of regulation of phosphodiesterase in neurodegenerative disorders
Collaborator Contribution knowledge of assay development
Impact This placement provided training of the participant in neuronal electrophysiological techniques, with the opportunity to bring this technology and methodology back to the University of Glasgow.
Start Year 2018

Description UCB CellTech - Goodyear/Virlan
Organisation UCB Pharma
Department UCB Celltech
Country United Kingdom
Sector Private
PI Contribution samples for immune phenotyping and
Collaborator Contribution single cell mass cytometry time of flight (CyTOF; a technique not currently available within the University) to interrogate the immune system. In brief, CyTOF is a new state-of-the-art technique that uses antibodies conjugated to heavy metals instead of the classical fluorochromes. Thus, allowing investigators to evaluate up to 42 parameters, which includes both deep-cellular phenotyping and intracellular activation states.
Impact started arrangements for generating CyTOF data here at the University and incorporate it into a publication in the future.
Start Year 2018

Description "Innovation for Collaboration Industry Day"
Form Of Engagement Activity Participation in an activity, workshop or similar
Part Of Official Scheme? No
Geographic Reach International
Primary Audience Professional Practitioners
Results and Impact The Innovation for Collaboration Industry Day 2018 objectives were:

To showcase the University of Glasgow's innovation activities and provide Innovate-UK with a platform to promote Scotland's engagement with the Industrial Challenge Strategy Fund;
To broker introductions between academics, industry and NHS through facilitated workshops and match making.

The FTMA supported the mobility of an ECR from Medtronic to participate in the workshop "Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund - Developing Connections". This opportunity provided knowledge exchange between industry R&D and academia. Medtronic also exhibited at the Industry Day.
