Technical Summary
PROMISE is a small scale focused research project concerned with harmonization of data collection, and interpretation, with regard to food safety across the EU27 member states. PROMISE aims to address challenges to food safety that arise as a consequence of increased globalization and increased food chain complexity. The PROMISE project team includes a significant component, from the EU New Member states, that will support integration of information across the wider community and a stronger emphasis on analysis and interpretation of community data – particularly in terms of spatio-temporal patterns and trends. Stronger interpretations will evaluate to significance of national borders, trade patterns and technology gradients. Additionally PROMISE will enhance knowledge of pathogen transmission and increase capability for risk assessments in the partner institutions. The project will include a major effort to improve EU wide networking and involvement of risk communicators to establish a sustainable approach to food safety management across the broader EU.

| Description | The PROMISE project involves approximately 40 research scientists in 20 organizations. The project includes both research and training/dissemination activities. At IFR a scheme more traditionally used for biosurveillance (three state model) has been used successfully to interpret information contained in the EU Community Summary report of food borne illness and zoonoses At IFR a scheme for representation of underreporting of food borne illness has been developed to include important additional dependency |

| Description | The initial concept of the PROMISE project (Developed in 2010) concerned harmonization of food safety information across 27 EU MS (with particular emphasis on new MS). As part of the PROMISE project IFR has delivered training, concerning mathematical modelling of prevalence, to a group of young researchers from EU MSs As part of the PROMISE project IFR has interacted with policy makers at EFSA regarding the analysis of EU summary report data |
