Abstract
Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.
Technical Summary
The objectives of this project are (1) to show the genetic relationships between new isolates of FMD virus causing outbreaks of disease around the world with those already held in the WRL for FMD; (2) to identify and monitor the appearance of new strains of FMD virus in the field by comparison with historical isolates; and (3) to determine if intertypic and/or intratypic recombination can be detected in FMD viruses isolated from outbreaks of disease in the field.

| Description | The epidemiology of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) was studied worldwide and genetic sequence data used to trace the origins of disease outbreaks and map the movement of FMD viruses around the world. |
| Exploitation Route | The sequences determined in the study have been added to the FMD World Reference Laboratory sequence database and have been and will be used in the study of FMD epidemiology. The sequences which have been published in international journals have also been submitted to the public sequence databases. Many other researchers have taken advanage of the sequence data in their studies. |

| Description | The genetic tracing of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks has had an impact on disease control in many countries (e.g. Egypt, where an increased incidence of virus movements from sub-Saharan Africa were demonstrated). |
