Abstract
Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.
Technical Summary
Using a combination of approaches we will gain greater insight into the mechanisms by which some ryegrasses can accumulate higher sugar levels and the ways in which this sugar can be utilised in the animal and in bioethanol production. In the past we have focused on the reserve sugars, sucrose, fructan and starch. In future our interests will be extended to include the structural polysaccharides of the cell wall (the primary determinants of dry biomass yield) and genetic determinants of the post-harvest mobilisation of this material for use as a biorenewable feedstock and substrate for bioethanol production. This work is collaborative with the Plant-Microbe Interactions and Bioenergy and Biorenewables SPGs.
