Measurement and modelling of electrical, transport and phase-change phenomena and application to Vacuum Arc Remelting for Optimal Material Quality

Lead Research Organisation: Imperial College London
Department Name: Materials

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description The first multi-scale model of an important industrial process, the production of nickel based superalloys via vacuum arc remelted, was developed and applied to improve the process via working with the industrial partners. The model has since been used for a number of other advanced manufacturing processes to improve their efficiency and hence minimise environmental impact.
Exploitation Route The main software developed was turned into open-source code and is now used by a range of academic and industrial organisations.
