Description This project has identified the occurrence of oxygen tricluster species in quasi-stable levitation quenched glasses. This observation has been directly compared and correlated with the occurrence of multiple tricluster species in aluminosilicates such as mullite and geoplymer systems, and mullite-type systems such as aluminoborates, and these observations have
opened the possibility for additional rarely occurring oxygen species such as quadclusters being formed (and possibly observed).
Exploitation Route This project has unequivocally identified the presence of rarely formed oxygen tricluster species in disordered glasses and more ordered (yet partially disordered) aluminosilicate mullite and geopolymer systems. These structural chemistry findings can be used to formulate and re-shape refractory materials formulations for high-temperature and impact-resistant applications.
