Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description We have shown that paper machines can be controlled in such a way that very large savings can be made in the amount of energy used. Better control of the first two stages of paper-making, namely vacuum draining and squeezing, leads to less energy being needed in the third and last stage, namely drying. The great majority of the energy is used in this last stage, to remove a very small amount of water. The potential energy saving is in the region of 25%, which is very significant since paper-making uses a lot of electricity.
Exploitation Route Paper-making machine vendors could build on our work to develop advanced control software for their machines.

Description The technical teams of the paper manufacturers that we worked with were informed by our methods and ideas, but I do not believe that they have yet been used.
