Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description Methodology to analyse PEO plasmas.
Exploitation Route Changes in electrolyte composition will lead to changes in plasma temperature, density (as detected) which in turn results in different coatings.
Sectors Aerospace, Defence and Marine,Energy,Manufacturing, including Industrial Biotechology,Transport

Description The findings advance our understanding of the PEO process for the production of coatings on different alloys. It is being exploited by Keronite Ltd to produce high performance coatings for aerospace, oil/gas exploration and elite sports equipment and has inspired academic research activities in Europe, America and China.

Title Fitting procedure for estimation of temporal variations in rotational and vibrational temperatures of OH radical during PEO process
Description Rotational temperature (if OH spectrum is measured with 308nm, 310nm, 312nm central wavelength positions) and vibrational temperature (if OH spectrum is measured with 312nm central wavelength position). The background intensity automatically taken off in the program, the experimental offset error is automatically calculated as well. The inputs 'centre_w' and 'g_lines' must match the centre wavelength and grating line-density that were used for the spectroscopic measurements. The spectral inputs 'lambda' and 'spectra' will normally be loaded from a suitable data file before calling the function. The inputs 'gwidth' and 'Lwidth' are the Gaussian and Lorentian widths of 'instrumental function' to be used for fitting the OH lines. These are the overall values and include both the real spectral broadening and the effects of the instrument function.

My talk provided examples together with some practical advice of emission spectroscopy as a diagnostics tool for PEO.
Examples of measured molecular rotational and vibrational temperatures were given. They were compared with electron excitation and translational temperatures. The plasma in vapour bubbles is close to thermal equilibrium with reasonably low degree of ionisation.

Large event (~2000 participants) organised by The Federation of European Materials Societies

After my talk, several questions have been exposed to the audience.
1) If there are different spectroscopic signature of OH and Al emission, would it be possible to separate one from another by gating of the signal?
2) How to estimate gas pressure in discharge bubbles?
3) Any possibility of time resolved spectroscopic measurements?
