Abstract
Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Do pedestrians look where we lit for them in the streets?
Description | We are now starting to understand what pedestrians are looking at at night and what they need to see. However, the initial findings proved to be much more complex than previously expected, as there appears to be some sort of feed back where people who are concerned, perhaps due to lack of light, need to see more than when they are less concerned. So the study revealed a direction of travel and many key issues but not all of the details that are necessary for an optimised specification of a road lighitng system. |
Exploitation Route | We have applied for and got further funding from the EPSRC to look at several key aspects of the previous work and with new research and reanalysis of the existing data provide detailed recommendations for road lighting practice. |

Description | Many of the finding of the research have been discussed within the street lighting profession. This discussion has been taken up with in standards bodies and the first result of this has been the publication of the European Standard on Road Lighting Performance Requirements, published in the UK on 31/01/2016 as BSEN 13201-2:2015. The publication of this standard will trigger a redrafting of the UK Standard on Road Lighting (BS 5489-1:2013) and following discussions with a number of the panel who will be responsible for the work it is very likely that our findings will influence the document. The process will be overseen by me, as the Chair of the supervisory Lighting Applications committee as BSI. Due to the changes in the standard coming from Europe (CEN - EN 13201 series) BSI has recently approved the business case to update BS 5489-1 and work of the standard is expected to start soon. |
