Description We are developing methods of refining the microstructure of alloys to help improve their properties, and through this project we have demonstrated that the thermo-electric effect, induced by applied magnetic fields (both permanent and electromagnetic), can be used to refine the microstructure, cause grain refining, refine intermetallics, and be used to segregate chemical species such as iron. The impact is wide, from improved properties to improved recyclability via removal of excess iron.
Exploitation Route The methods could be used by metallurgical industries in the UK to improve their product quality via refining microstructural feature sizes and remove iron during recycling,

Description The results of the synchrotron studies have revealed how the microstructures formed during the production of aluminium alloys can be refined, both of the primary and of secondary phases, such as iron intermetallics. The results also demonstrate that magnetic (permanent and electromagnetic) can be used to refine the alloys, effectively zone refining elements such as iron, which can be detrimental to properties. These new insights will impact on the recyclability, efficacy and final properties of components made. The PDRA (Cai) on this project filed a patent based on the work done on this proposal for improved efficiency recycling of Al alloys.

PI Contribution This project includes both experimental and modelling and simulation ( M&S) tasks. Diamond and University of Manchester are the leads for experimental and the University of Greenwich, is the lead for M & S simulation works. The code for calculating metallic alloy growth under influence of an external magnetic field has been developed University of Greenwich and the results from the January DLS beamtime will be used to validate Greenwich models.

Title ALUMINIUM PURIFICATION
Description A method for separating iron from an aluminium alloy comprises providing a first zone of an aluminium alloy at a first temperature at which the aluminium alloy is partially melted and any iron-containing particles therein are fully molten, and providing a second zone of the alloy at a second temperature at which the aluminium alloy is fully molten, such that a temperature gradient is created between the first zone and the second zone. By applying a static homogeneous magnetic field to the alloy, and maintaining the temperature gradient and the magnetic field for a period of time, the iron content of the first and/or second zone can be reduced.

Description 2016 Royal Society Summer Exhibition: 4D Science
Form Of Engagement Activity Participation in an activity, workshop or similar
Part Of Official Scheme? No
Geographic Reach International
Primary Audience Public/other audiences
Results and Impact This exhibition on "4D Science" highlighted how we've used 4D synchrotron X-ray tomography to solve a range of challenges from materials science to geology to food stuffs. Highlights included replicating the flow of magma to better understand volcanic eruptions, to the coarsening of ice crystals to understand why some ice cream tastes better. 16,000 visitors came to the week long exhibition. The Lee group led the work, together with Diamond Light Source, the Lavallee group at Liverpool, the Research Complex at Harwell, and Unilever.

Primary Audience Schools
Results and Impact Diamond Light Source holds both regular open days for the general public, and also separate days for school visits. Being based in the RCaH, my group regularly sets up one stand or posters as part of many activities. Demonstrations included 3D printing demonstrations, a lego working replica of a tomography beamline, and examples of how tomography is used to research problems in multiple length scales e.g. from looking inside bioactive implants to looking inside a battery during discharge.
