Dielectrowetting: Controlling Oleo- and Hydrophilicity and Shaping Liquid Surfaces

Lead Research Organisation: Northumbria University
Department Name: Fac of Engineering and Environment

Abstract

How liquids wet solid surfaces is of fundamental importance to a wide-range of scientific disciplines and technological applications from creating thin films on semiconductor wafers, through adhesion and coating of surfaces, to effective droplet deposition and mixing on DNA microarrays. Electrostatic fields can alter how effectively a liquid wets a solid surface. In recent years uniform electric fields have been used to control and manipulate droplets of conducting (ion containing) liquids, typically a salt solution, by using the liquid-solid contact area as one electrode in a capacitive structure - so called electrowetting. This has led to new voltage controlled variable focus liquid lenses, liquid-based electronic paper and droplet-based microfluidic systems. The key to electrowetting is the ability of an applied voltage to reversibly increase the effective hydrophilicity of a solid surface and reduce the contact angle of the droplet without altering the surface chemistry. However, many liquids of interest are not conducting and the need for a sandwich-style capacitive structure and direct physical contact to the liquid limits its range of applicability.

In this project we create a new method of controlling hydrophilicity and oleophilicity of materials by using the dielectric properties of liquids, but with the effects localized to an interface. Unllike electrowetting which focuses on the ions, our method focuses on the dipoles in a liquid. Using a non-uniform electric field generates unequal forces on the two ends of the dipole. The resulting dielectrophoretic force can result in movement and redistribution of the liquid into the areas of highest field gradient. The basis of our project is the understanding that when the liquid has solid-liquid, liquid-vapor or liquid-liquid interfaces, dielectric energy changes can be coupled to surface free energy changes. With a suitable decaying electric field, the effects of liquid dielectrophoresis can be confined to either the solid-liquid interface or to the liquid-vapor (or liquid-liquid) interface and can be used with a non-conducting liquid.

By using microfabricated interdigitated electrodes a decaying, and hence non uniform, electric field can be created above a solid surface. For a droplet thicker than the decay length of the electric field, the major change of the surface energy compensating liquid dielectrophoretic energy changes is via a change in the contact area with a solid and so this can be a method of reversibly controlling the contact angle and, hence, the hydro- and oleo- philicity of a surface. For a thin liquid film the major change of the surface energy compensating liquid dielectrophoretic energy changes is via a change in the shape of the liquid-vapor (or liquid-liquid) interface and so, in this case, it becomes a method for shaping a liquid surface.

In this method of localizing the effects of liquid dielectrophoresis to an interface the contrast to electrowetting is that,

1. the electric fields are non-uniform;
2. the electric fields are generated by surface microfabricated co-planar rather than sandwich electrode structures;
3. the forces act upon the dipoles in the liquids, which can therefore be non-conducting (or conducting), rather than upon ions of conducting liquids;
4. the method does not suffer from saturation of the contact angle and so can be used to produce liquid films.

The research in this project seeks to establish an approach to wetting that allows conducting and non-conducting liquids to be manipulated using electric fields in a manner complementary to electrowetting. The project will provide the understanding needed to allow future development of novel droplet microfluidic, liquid microactuation, liquid-based optics and displays. The project includes industrial partners who have expertise in the development and commercialisation of microfluidic liquid handling, lab-on-chip devices, display devices and optofluidic systems.

Planned Impact

(1) Knowledge and Techniques
Being able to localize the effect of liquid dielectrophoresis to an interface ("dielectrowetting") would establish a new voltage controllable method of tuning the interaction of a liquid with a surface. Since interactions at the solid-liquid interface are common in engineering and physical sciences disciplines and across a range of industrial sectors, the long term benefits could impact widely. Over the last fifteen years the extension of knowledge of wetting to electrowetting has led to new techniques for lab-on-a-chip, optical and displays applications. The principle of electrowetting has led to white light based electronic paper (Liquavista a spin-out from Philips Eindhoven and now part of Samsung), fast variable focus liquid lenses (Varioptic, France), high intensity edge wave-guide colour display (Extreme Photonix, USA) and digital microfluidics (Advanced Liquid Logic, USA) to name just a few. Dielectrowetting has similar potential, but with the ability to use a wider range of liquids and without needing direct electrical contact to the liquid.

(2) Economic Impact
A key priority for the UK economy is the development of high-value and specialist manufacturing. Our first industrial collaborator Merck is an example of a company based on specialist chemicals and materials - often for liquid crystal displays companies located in the Far East. Their success, like the UK's, depends on identifying emerging technologies at an early stage. The theme of emerging technologies and advanced manufacturing is also that of our two other industrial collaborators. L-3 TRL Technology is a high-tech UK company dealing with defence systems. The Dolomite Centre Ltd specialize in translating research concepts in microfluidics from the lab to products, solutions and instrumentation for industry. These collaborators provide a direct route to leveraging industrial benefits from any IPR identified. They are also well-placed in industrial networks to direct the project team to the wider UK industry as potential partners where opportunities less relevant to them develop during the research. The international extent of these companies means a new approach developed within the UK could provide inward investment from overseas and/or, as in the case of Merck, a base to provide specialist liquids/materials to overseas based industries.

This project may also provide potential for re-engineering of the approaches to some applications, such as lab-on-chip diagnostics, optics, electronic paper and displays. As a technology, control using dielectrowetting has the potential to provide simple device fabrication and low power consumption with the accompanying environmental benefits arising from the manufacturing process and device usage. Where there are no concerns relating to IPR/NDAs, we will seek to publicize work via presentations at KTN events, publication of research, and presentation at national and international conferences.

(3) People Pipeline
The UK skills base would benefit directly from the training of a multidisciplinary postdoctoral researcher having skills relevant to high value manufacturing due to the project including work in (i) microfluidics, (ii) liquid-based optics, (iii) electrostatics, (iv) instrumentation and (v) device design and fabrication. Theey will also have received public communication training and have taken part in the our Nature's Raincoats Outreach work (http://www.naturesraincoats.com/), including at the 2013 British Science Festival. Undergraduate summer research bursary student involvement in the project will promote interest in research thereby helping to ensure a continuing pipeline of future PhD students (particularly important at a time of increasing undergraduate fees). In addition, the project team have included the creation of a "Kit-in-a-Kase" (a portable schools/outreach demonstrator experiment) based upon dielectrowetting for use with our Nature's Raincoats activity.

Description Liquid dielectrophoresis is a known effect whereby a body force is exerted on a dielectric liquid by placing it within a non-uniform electric field. This project developed the concept of interface-localized liquid dielectrophoresis whereby the effects of liquid dielectrophoresis only occur at an interface between two fluids (e.g. dielectric liquid-air, immiscible dielectric liquids) or at the interface between a liquid and a solid. This latter effect has now been called "Dielectrowetting" in analogy to "Electrowetting", which is the use of electric fields to control the wetting of a conducting droplet on solid surface. Electrowetting has been an important technique since it was founded in the 1990's in creating liquid lenses (e.g. Varioptic), liquid paper (Liquavista) and digital droplet microfluidics (e.g. for bio-assays - Liquid Logic. However, electrowetting-in-air is limited by an effect called contact angle saturation and is therefore unable to induce the formation of films. When the electrowetting is used to manipulate a droplet in air it also suffers from a hysteresis effect.

In our work on dielectrowetting we have been able to show a number of key advances including

1. a dielectric droplet immersed in a second immiscible liquid can be reversibly controlled between a droplet and film state;
2. axisymmetric droplet spreading control can be achieved thereby providing programmable liquid lenses;
3. lubricant impregnated substrates can be used to minimize the hysteresis effects in both electrowetting and dielectrowetting;
4. axisymmetric films of dielectric liquids can be induced on non-wetting substrates and the dynamics of dewetting from a film to a droplet state studied initiated by the removal of the electric field.

The removal of hysteresis effects and full reversible control of wetting from droplet to film state provides future opportunities for both optofluidic and microfluidic research. The ability to induce arbitrarily shaped films of liquids on otherwise non-wetting substrates in a highly controlled manner and study their dewetting into single droplets was not previously possible and provides both a tool and a direction for future research. In particular, the shapes of films could be controlled by design into non-natural shapes and shapes combined into arrays thereby opening up possibilities in display applications.
Exploitation Route The knowledge generated has been communicated through conferences and journal publications and summarized in an invited review "Dielectrowetting: The past, present and future" (2018) enabling adoption of the techniques by others. New knowledge on the control of liquid films will be taken forwards by the academic investigators., whilst microfluidics research is being pursued by the Lab-on-a-Chip community (e.g. Lab on a Chip, vol 17, 1060, 2017).

Dielectrowetting ideas and techniques have been included in a recent book "Electrowetting: Fundamental Principles and Practical Applications" (2019) where it forms section 9.2 "Dielectrowetting and Dielectrophoresis" within Chapter 9 on "Related and Emerging Topics". This book will become a key reference for academic and industrial researchers ensuring that dielectrowetting is considered as a technique. We expect potentially commercial aspects of the research knowledge will be adopted by companies using electrowetting as their technology platform.

The understanding of dewetting has been translated into a simulation tool for the coating/printing industry by S. Abbott (former Director of Research, MacDermid Autotype) (https://www.stevenabbott.co.uk/practical-coatings/Dewetting.php). His industrial consultancy and website resources are extensive and will broaden industrial awareness.

Information included in the teams' Outreach activities will be continued via the group's Natures Raincoats exhibition thereby communicating with a public audience.

Description This project has contributed to i) a new concept for control of droplets and liquid films using non-uniform electric fields and ii) a modelling tool explaining dewetting in printing and coating (https://www.stevenabbott.co.uk/practical-coatings/Dewetting.php). It has created a new international research field based upon "Interface Localized Liquid Dielectrophoresis" called "Dielectrowetting" . Electrowetting has been known since the 1990's as an effect allowing a uniform electric field to be used to control the shape of a droplet of a conducting liquid and to actuate its motion. It has provided a method to create liquid lenses, optofluidics and droplet microfluidics implemented in lab-on-a-chip systems resulting in lens, display and microfluidic companies. However, the technique could not produce films or be used with non-conducting liquids. In this work, liquid dielectrophoresis was used with non-uniform electric fields at the solid-liquid interface to control the shape of a droplet of a dielectric liquid thereby creating the new field of "dielectrowetting". In "Dielectrophoresis-driven spreading of immersed liquid droplets" (doi: 10.1021/la503931p) we demonstrated it was possible to use dielectrowetting to control the shape of a droplet when immersed in a second immiscible liquid. This is important for lens applications as it allows neutral buoyancy needed for arbitrary orientation operation and resistance to shocks. In this work we also demonstrated it was possible to determine the value of liquid-liquid interfacial tensions. In previous work, the technique had only shown control of stripes of liquids, which is restrictive for optical applications. In "Near axisymmetric partial wetting using interface-localized liquid dielectrophoresis" (doi: 10.1021/acs.langmuir.6b03010) we created a method to spread droplets axisymmetrically and so lifted a key restriction relevant to voltage programmable liquid lenses. Electrowetting suffers from both hysteresis caused by contact line pinning and saturation effect preventing it being used to convert a droplet into a film. In "Electric field induced reversible spreading of droplets into films on lubricant impregnated surfaces" (doi: 10.1063/1.4978859) we introduced the new concept of pinning-free substrates created by impregnating a lubricant oil into a hydrophobic nanoparticle coating. These substrates are self-healing and remove hysteresis thereby enabling fully reversible changes with voltage in both electrowetting and dielectrowetting. Importantly, we demonstrated that dielectrowetting was also able to convert a droplet into a film. This is important for applications beyond lenses, such as liquid optical shutters. Droplets and their spreading into films are important in the printing and coating industry. The reverse process of a liquid film retracting into a droplet is also important, but methods for systematic static have been lacking. In "Not spreading in reverse: The dewetting of a liquid film into a single drop" (doi: 10.1126/sciadv.1600183) we introduced a new technique to induce a liquid film on a substrate that would not normally allow a liquid film to form on it, and then trigger its dewetting into a single droplet. We also provided a simulation methodology for this process and provided an analytical analysis enabling different regimes to be understood. This is relevant to the ability to coat surfaces and was implemented by S. Abbott, former Director of Research for MacDermid Autotype, as a modelling tool for the printing and coating industry. In "Dielectrowetting: The past, present and future" (doi: 10.1016/j.cocis.2017.11.005) we were able to provide a comprehensive overview of the ideas that had been developed and contextualize them with applications in microfluidics, dielectric liquid lenses, dielectric liquid iris, diffraction gratings (beam steering), optical switches and displays. This is important in providing an easy to access overview and single reference source for the ideas developed and their application. The research was discussed with a range of individuals in companies producing electrowetting-based products at the (10th International) Meeting on Electrowetting (Taipei, Taiwan, 2016) for which a new session was devoted to the topic of "Dielectrophoresis/Dielectrowetting" and was part of presentations made to a number of companies. These discussions also continued at the (11th International) Meeting on Electrowetting (Twente, The Netherlands, 2018) and also resulted in a dedicated section "Dielectrowetting and Dielectrophoresis" within Chapter 9 on "Related and Emerging Topics" of a new book "Electrowetting: Fundamental Principles and Practical Applications" by Frieder Mugele and Jason Heikenfeld (Wiley VCH, Feb. 2019, ISBN-10: 3527412298). The project team were invited by Jaguar Landrover (JLR) to put forward a proposal for their EPSRC Industrial Case funding for developing ideas applicable to their interests. The case was selected for funding (JLR), but EPSRC declined to allow this due to its policy on not permitting Universities without an EPSRC DTP to hold Industrial Case awards. The PI agreed for the project to transfer to a research contact at Durham University and this became Industrial Case Award EP/P510476/1 as part of the Durham University Industrial CASE Account 2016. As part to this funding, the ideas have resulted in Jaguar Landrover support for "Programmable Droplet Actuating Platform Using Liquid Dielectrophoresis" (doi: 10.1088/1361-6439/abf032), "Platforms via an Electric Field Gradient: Electrowetting and Liquid Dielectrophoresis" (doi: 10.1021/acs.langmuir.1c00329) and "Tilting Micromirror Platform Based on Liquid Dielectrophoresis" (doi: 10.1016/j.sna.2021.113177). Our ideas developed under EPSRC project "Dielectrowetting: Controlling Oleo- and Hydrophilicity and Shaping Liquid Surfaces" are now regarded as a distinctive international research field with other researchers producing reviews on "Dielectrowetting" (e.g. "Wettability Manipulation by Interface-Localized Liquid Dielectrophoresis: Fundamentals and Applications", doi: 10.3390/mi10050329 and "Dielectrowetting for Digital Microfluidics: Principle and Application. A Critical Review", doi: 10.7569/RAA.2017.097308). These ideas are having a substantial influence on the development of novel lab-on-chip systems. It is possible to trace articles within the academic literature back to the influence of work published from our EPSRC project and these cover a wide range of areas (e.g. microfluidics, drop transport/impact/rebound, adhesion, icing, film stability, lubrication, biomedical devices, heat transfer, optofluidics). A search on the European patents database (date: 6/3/22) using the term "Dielectrowetting" shows six results which appear to have been motivated through research related to our EPSRC project.
